William White's History, Gazetteer, and Directory of Norfolk 1845

RACKHEATH, a parish and scattered village, 4½ miles N.E. by N. of Norwich, on the Worstead road, has 276 inhabitants, and 1980A. of light, loamy land, with a sub-stratum of chalk. It was anciently in two parishes, called Great and Little Rackheath; but the church, in the latter division, was taken down several centuries ago, and its site is now unknown.

The remaining CHURCH, (All Saints,) is a small structure, standing alone in the fields, and is a rectory, valued in the King's Book at £6. 13s. 4d., but now has 26 acres of glebe, and a yearly rent of £450, awarded in 1837, in lieu of tithes. The Rev. George Stracey is the incumbent; and the patronage is in Sir Edward H.J. Stracey, Bart., the owner of the soil, and lord of the manor, who resides at the Hall, a modern mansion of white brick, standing on an eminence, in a richly wooded park.

Rackheath was anciently held by a family of its own name, and had a priory, the temporalities of which were valued, in 1428, at 41s. 3d. The Yelvertons, afterwards Earls of Essex, were seated here in the reign of Edward II.

At the enclosure, in 1802, a yearly rent of 10d. per acre, amounting to £22 per annum, was charged on the allotments, to be paid to the poor for a distribution of coals.

RACKHEATH is a parish and scattered village, 4½ miles N.E. by N. of Norwich, on the Stalham road, and is in St. Faith's union, Taverham hundred and petty sessional division, Norwich county court and bankruptcy district, Norwich polling district of South Norfolk, Taverham rural deanery, and Norwich archdeaconry. It had 302 inhabitants in 1881, living on 1980 acres of light loamy land, with a substratum of chalk. It has a rateable value of £3055, and was anciently in two parishes, called Great and Little Rackheath; but the church in the latter division was taken down several centuries ago, and its site is now unknown.

Sir H.J. Stracey, Bart., is the owner of the soil and lord of the manor. He resides at the Hall, a handsome white brick mansion in the Italian style, standing on an eminence in an extensive and richly wooded park, which is well stocked with deer, and contains a large lake. At the entrance are fixed the elegantly designed wrought-iron gates, purchased at the Great Exhibition of 1851, by the present baronet, who has much improved and enlarged both the park and house. The house contains a splendid walnut sideboard, finely carved with figures of men, fruit, fish, and game; and also a choice collection of paintings, amongst which are a Vandyck, and a very valuable Rubens, representing Coriolanus before Rome.

The CHURCH (All Saints) is a small structure of the Early Decorated period, standing alone in the fields, and comprising nave with south aisle and clerestory, chancel, and square tower containing three bells. Here are several mural tablets of the Pettus and Stracey families. The windows were all filled with rich stained glass in 1857, at the expense of Sir Henry Josias Stracey, Bart., who is patron of the rectory, valued in the King's Book at £6 13s. 4d., and now having 26 acres of glebe and a yearly rent-charge of £450, awarded in 1837 in lieu of tithes, and is in the incumbency of the Rev. Thomas Harrison, who has a neat brick residence built in 1856, at a cost of £1200.

The school, to which a residence for the mistress is attached, was erected in 1850 by the late baronet, was enlarged in 1881, and is attended by about 75 children. A parish reading-room was built in 1881, and is supplied with the local papers and periodicals.

POST OFFICE at Mr. James Newstead's. Letters arrive at 5.20 a.m., and are despatched at 5.45 p.m., viâ Norwich, which is the nearest Money Order and Telegraph Office.

Clergy of the Church of England (CCEd), 1540 to 1835: The Clergy Database contains details of clergymen, dioceses, bishops, etc. It ends in 1835, which was when publications such as Clergy Lists became available.

This was published in 1817, 1822, 1829 and 1836. Its title page described it as:

containing a complete register of the Dignities and Benefices of the Church of England, with the Names of their present Possessors, Patrons, &c. and an Alphabetical List of the Dignitaries and Beneficed Clergy; with an Appendix containing the Ecclesiastical Patronage at the Disposal of the King, the Lord Chancellor, Archbishops and Bishops, Deans and Chapters, Colleges at the Universities, &c.

It was succeeded by "The Clergy List" in 1841.

Crockford's Clerical Directory was first published in 1858, containing details of benefices in England and Wales, and biographies of the clergy. Later editions included Scotland, Ireland and other parts of the Anglican Communion. It continues to the present day.

Norfolk Gazetteers and Directories: Terminology

In some of the Norfolk gazetteers and directories (such as White's, Kelly's and Harrod's), terminology and expressions are used which are not always explained, as they would have been understood when the book was published.

The King's Book(s) (often abbreviated to K.B.)

Another name for the Valor Ecclesiasticus, compiled in 1535-36 as an inventory of ecclesiastical and monastic goods and properties. [Henry VIII; Dissolution of the Monasteries].

Queen Anne's Bounty

A fund established by Queen Anne in 1704 for the benefit of the poorer clergy, from revenue that had been due to her. In the 19th century, the fund also received private donations and grants from Parliament.

Tithes

Payment of one tenth of the produce, or the earnings, of the inhabitants of a parish, for the maintenance of the church. From 1836 to 1891, tithes were replaced with rent charges based on the price of corn. [Tithe Acts].

Impropriation

The transfer of tithes, after the Dissolution of the Monasteries, from the monasteries to laymen. So an impropriator was a layman who received the tithes from the parish.

Rectors and Vicars

A rector was a parish priest, who received the parish revenues directly. A vicar was a parish priest, who did not receive the revenues, but received part of them from the impropriator.

Norfolk Hundreds

White's History, Gazetteer, and Directory of Norfolk 1845

BROTHERCROSS HUNDRED

Is one of the smallest divisions of Norfolk, being of an oblong figure, only eight miles in length from north to south, and five miles in breadth. It is bounded on the east by North Greenhoe; on the south by Gallow; on the west by Smithdon Hundred; and on the north by the Ocean; where it is terminated by an insulated ridge of sand hills, called the Scald Heads, occupied only by rabbits, and having near it a prolific bed of excellent oysters.

This Hundred is generally a fertile and picturesque country, and forms, with 18 parishes in Gallow Hundred, the Deanery of Burnham.

It contains only nine PARISHES, viz:- the six Burnhams, North and South Creake, and Waterden, which are in Docking Union, (see page 633 [this is Smithdon Hundred],) and comprise 4,382 inhabitants, and 19,169 acres of land, assessed to the County rate, in 1843, at the annual value of £25,876; and to the property tax, at £20,780 in 1815, and at £25,109 in 1842.

They are all in Docking Police Division, except Waterden, which is in that of Briningham.

Petty Sessions are held at Burnham-Westgate, on the last Saturday of every month; and Mr. Thos. Garwood is clerk to the magistrates.

Brothercross and Gallow Hundreds, were possessed by the Crown, till Henry I. gave them to Wm. Earl of Warren and Surrey, to be held of the castle of Norwich, paying two marks yearly.

Norfolk Hundreds

CLAVERING HUNDRED

Lies at the south-east extremity of the county, -- being bounded on the west by Loddon Hundred, on the north by the river Yare, and on the south and east by the river Waveney, which divides it from Suffolk, but it has a detached member, encompassed by Loddon and Henstead Hundreds, at the distance of 4 or 5 miles, and containing the three parishes of Burgh-Apton, Brooke and Howe.

Exclusive of this insulated member, it averages from 6 to 8 miles in length and breadth, except at the north-east end, where it is crossed by the Norwich and Lowestoft Ship Canal, and terminated by a narrow peninsular slip, three miles in length, ending at the confluence of the navigable rivers -- Yare and Waveney. The soil is generally rich and fertile, though a great part of it is in wet marshes.

The Deanery of Brooke, in the Archdeaconry of Norfolk, comprehends all the parishes in the Hundreds of Clavering, Loddon, and Henstead.

Petty Sessions for this, and Loddon Hundred, are held at the Swan Inn, Loddon, (see page 796. [description of Loddon Hundred]) The following enumeration of the 20 parishes of Clavering Hundred, shews their population in 1841, the annual value of their lands and buildings, as assessed to the County Rate in 1843, and their territorial extent, in assessable acres:-

* Heckingham return included 138 persons in the Union Workhouse.
+ This Hundred had 6611 inhabitants in 1831. Its annual value, as assessed to the property tax, was £43,318, in 1815, and £53,486, in 1842. It is in Loddon Police Division.

LODDON and CLAVERING UNION comprises all the 40 parishes of Loddon and Clavering Hundreds, and also Yelverton, in Henstead Hundred. These 41 parishes were incorporated, for the support of their poor, by act of parliament, in 1763, when they built a large House of Industry at Heckingham, with room for about 500 paupers.

This was adopted as the Union Workhouse, in 1836, when it was much injured by fire, supposed to have been occasioned by an incendiary. It was repaired, altered, and enlarged, at the cost of £3145, and has now room for 600 paupers, but it has seldom more than half that number, and in summer only about 150.

The Union comprises an area of 89 square miles, and had 14,472 inhabitants, in 1841, of whom 7121 were males, and 7351 females. The average annual expenditure of its 41 parishes, from 1832 to 1835, was £6494. In 1838, it was £4474; in 1839, £5230; in 1842, £4348; and for the quarter ending Michaelmas, 1844, £1872.

J. Kerrich, Esq., is chairman of the Board of Guardians; James Copeman, Esq., of Loddon, is union clerk and superintendent registrar; Mr. Wm. Hoddy, of Loddon, is registrar of marriages; the Rev. W. Hobson is chaplain; Messrs. J.H.Wooltorton and E. Easter are the relieving officers; and Mr. John Brigham and wife are master and matron of the Workhouse.

Five surgeons are employed by the Union, and the average weekly cost per week, per head, of the in-door poor, is 2s 4d. for food, and 5½d. for clothing.

DISS HUNDRED

Is so called from its thriving market town, and is nearly a square district, about seven miles in length and breadth, bounded on the west by Guiltcross; on the north, by Depwade; on the east, by Earsham Hundred; and on the south by the river Waveney, which divides it from Suffolk.

It is a well wooded and fertile district, generally champaign, but rising in some places in gentle undulations, and having mostly a strong loamy soil, which is generally moist, owing to a substratum of impervious blue clay, lying at the depth of from one to two feet.

Diss and Earsham were anciently one Hundred, and they still form the Deanery of Redenhall, in the Archdeaconry of Norfolk. Diss Hundred holds its Petty Sessions at the town of Diss, on the first and last Mondays of every month; and Mr. John Muskett is clerk to the magistrates.

The following enumeration of its 16 parishes shews their population in 1841, the annual value of their lands and buildings, as assessed to the county rate in 1843, and their territorial extent.

SOUTH ERPINGHAM HUNDRED

Is a highly cultivated district, finely interspersed with woods, streams, villages, churches, and many handsome seats. It is of a crooked spiral figure, about 16 miles in length, exclusive of a narrow strip at its northern extremity, terminating at West Beckham; and varying from 9 to less than 5 miles in breadth, extending to within 3 miles of the ocean. It is bounded on the south by Taverham, on the west by Eynesford and Holt, on the north by North Erpingham, and on the east by Tunstead Hundred. The river Bure flows through it, from Corpusty to Belaugh, receiving in its course many tributary streams, watering a fertile valley, which in some places is broken into bold and picturesque acclivities. In 1773, an act was obtained to make the Bure navigable from Coltishall up to Aylsham, a market town, nearly in the centre of this Hundred, which forms, in ecclesiastical matters, the Deanery of Ingworth, in the Archdeaconry of Norwich.

PETTY SESSIONS, for the whole Hundred, are held at the Black Boy, Aylsham, every Tuesday; and Mr. Fredk. Roe is clerk to the magistrates. The fee of it remained in the Crown till 1226, when Henry III. granted it to Hubert de Burgh, Earl of Kent, at which time the Hundred Court was held at Cawston Park Gate.

It contains 38 parishes, of which the following is an enumeration, shewing their population in 1841, the annual value of their lands and buildings, as assessed to the County Rate in 1843, and their territorial extent, in assessable acres.

All the above parishes are in Aylsham Union, except Baconsthorpe and West Beckham, which are in Erpingham Union, and Booton, which is in St. Faith's Union. All are in Aylsham Police Division, except Belaugh, which is in Dereham Division. The population of the Hundred, in 1831, was 14,898. Its annual value, as assessed to the PROPERTY TAX, was £56,205, in 1815, and £85,527, in 1842.

* @ AYLSHAM UNION comprises 35 parishes in South Erpingham, and 11 parishes in Eynesford Hundred. (See page 344. [this is in Eynesford Hundred description]) These 46 parishes comprise an area of 106 square miles; and in 1841, had 20,056 inhabitants, of whom 9869 were males and 10,187 females. Their average annual expenditure, during the three years preceding the formation of the Union, was £20,391; but in 1838, it was only £9652. For the quarter ending Dec. 1844, it was £2569.

The Union Workhouses are at Buxton and Oulton, both of which are old Houses of Industry; that at Buxton, 4 miles S.S.E. of Aylsham, being built before the year 1800, for nine incorporated parishes, (marked * in the foregoing table;) and that at Oulton, 3½ miles N.W. of Aylsham, being altered in 1804, as a Workhouse for the six parishes marked @ in the foregoing table.

After the formation of the Union, in 1836, these houses were altered and enlarged, at the cost of about £1200. That at Buxton has room for about 400 paupers, and that at Oulton for about 100. Only the aged and infirm are sent to the latter, where the average weekly cost of each inmate, for food and clothing, is 2s 11.; but at Buxton it is 2s. 0½d. The Union has two chaplains and eight surgeons; and Mr. Wm. Hill, of Marsham, is Union Clerk and Supt. Registrar.

The Masters of the Workhouses are, Mr. Thomas Potter, at Buxton, and Mr. E. F. Barnaby, at Oulton. Mr. J. Wright and Mr. A. Sands are the district registrars and relieving officers. In the months of Oct. Nov. and Dec. 1844, no fewer than 18 persons died in this Union, each of them above 80, and three of them above 90 years of age.

EAST AND WEST FLEGG HUNDREDS.

EAST AND WEST FLEGG, two of the smallest Hundreds of Norfolk, are on the sea coast, at the east end of the county, and are nearly of equal extent, containing together about 30,000 acres of land, stretching nearly eleven miles northward from the Borough of Yarmouth, and forming, in ecclesiastical affairs, the DEANERY OF FLEGG, to which the DEANERY OF YARMOUTH was perpetually united in the year 1345; so that the Archdeacon's visitations for the whole district, have since been held in Yarmouth.

Petty Sessions, for the two Hundreds, are held on the first and third Tuesday of every month, at Rollesby and Yarmouth. Mr. S. B. Cory is clerk to the magistrates. Both Hundreds are in Ludham Police Division.

Of the twenty-five villages and parishes in East and West Flegg, no fewer than fourteen of them have the Saxon termination, by, signifying a dwelling.

They were all incorporated for parochial purposes by an act of the 15th of George the Third; and a HOUSE OF INDUSTRY, for the reception of the poor of both Hundreds, was erected at Rollesby, in 1776 and enlarged in 1818 and 1834, so that it will now accommodate 400 paupers, though the number of inmates seldom amounts to 200, and in summer is generally less than 100. They are employed in spade husbandry, and the manufacture of rope, twine, fishing-nets, sacking, &c. This large workhouse, for a thinly populated district, is built in the form of the letter H, so as to admit of a complete separation of the two sexes.

It is under the control of 48 guardians, chosen yearly, and a number of directors, consisting of all the magistrates and freeholders of £200 per annum, resident in the 20 incorporated parishes, which, in the quarter ending April, 1844, expended £894, of which £218 was for the maintenance of in-door paupers, and £465 for out-door relief. The number in the house during the same quarter was 156, and the number of out-door paupers 796. The dietary system now in use has been introduced by the Poor Law Commissioners, who have here no further authority than the New Poor Law gives them in similar incorporations.

The Rev. Wm. Lucas is chairman, and William Rising, Esq., vice-chairman of the Board of Directors and Guardians, to whom Mr. Samuel B. Cory, of Yarmouth, is clerk. Mr John Mountseer is superintendent registrar and master of the Workhouse; the Rev. J. Morton is chaplain, and Messrs. W. and J. Cooper are the surgeons. Mr. W. Cooper is also registrar of marriages for both hundreds. The registrars of births and deaths are the said Mr. W. Cooper, for West Flegg; and Mr. Robert S. Beare, for East Flegg.

EAST FLEGG Hundred, the most eastern division of Norfolk, is of an irregular triangular figure, extending west and north from Yarmouth, and bounded on the east by the German Ocean, and on its other sides by the rivers Yare and Bure, and the Hundred of West Flegg; from which latter, it is separated for a considerable extent by a chain of marshland lakes or pools, called the "Broads," and forming a small river called the "Muck Fleet," which flows westward to the Bure; indeed both the Flegg Hundreds are nearly insulated with salt and fresh water. East Flegg extends about five miles along the coast northward, from Yarmouth, and about seven miles westward, on the north side of the river Bure, which divides it from Walsham Hundred.

WEST FLEGG is bounded by East Flegg on the south, Walsham Hundred on the west, Happing Hundred on the north, and the Ocean on the east. It extends about 3½ miles along the coast, and 7½ miles inland; and is nearly surrounded by marshes; but its interior rises in bold and well cultivated swells. Mr. Young, in his "Farmer's Tour," recommends the method of farming practised here; and even Camden extols the soil as being fruitful in corn, and says that here "the Danes seem to have made their first settlement, both because it was nearest their landing, and pretty well fortified by nature; being almost surrounded by water."

An Act of Parliament is about to be obtained for improving the drainage of the low marshes in this and the adjoining Hundreds.

There were formerly 26 Parish Churches in these Hundreds, but seven of them were dilapidated many years ago, and their cures annexed to the present nineteen parishes, of which the following is an enumeration, showing the population of each in 1841, the annual value of their land and buildings, as assessed to the County Rate, in 1843, and their territorial extent.

The annual value of East Flegg, as assessed to the PROPERTY TAX, was £18,617, in 1815, and £28,691, in 1842. That of West Flegg was £18,322, in 1815, and £32,875 in 1842.

FREEBRIDGE-LYNN HUNDRED.

Freebridge-Lynn, one of the largest divisions of Norfolk, lies at the west end of the county, and extends from 12 to 15 miles in length and breadth, stretching east, north, and south, from the borough of King's Lynn. It extends southward to Setch and Pentney, eastward to Castle Acre, Massingham, and Harpley, and northward to Dersingham and Anmer; and lies east of Marshland, with which it was formerly comprehended under the name of "Freebridge Hundred and a Half," an appellation said to be derived from St. Germain's Bridge being toll-free, and then the only bridge that crossed the Great Ouse river, between the two districts, which, in ecclesiastical affairs, constitute the Deanery of Lynn, in the Archdeaconry of Norwich.

Freebridge-Lynn is bounded on the north by Smithdon Hundred; on the east by Gallow and Launditch Hundreds; on the south by the river Nar and the parish of Watlington; and on the west by the Borough of Lynn, the Great Ouse river, and that broad estuary of the ocean, called The Wash, or Metaris AEstiarium, which receives on this side the waters of the Ouse from Lynn, and on the other, the river Nene from Wisbech. The mouths of these rivers are distant nearly ten miles from each other, and the coasts of Norfolk and Lincolnshire, branching from them in a northerly direction, form the largest bay on the eastern side of England, except the estuary of the Thames; but at low water, immense tracts of sand and silt are left bare, and many thousand acres have, at various periods, been recovered from the influx of the tides.

On the Lincolnshire side of the bay, about 15,000 acres have been warped and cultivated since the construction of the embanked road across that part of it called Cross Key's Wash; and an Act of Parliament is about to be obtained for constructing a new outfall for the rivers Nene and Ouse, and reclaiming from the Norfolk side of the Wash 32,000 acres of valuable land, more than half of which will adjoin this Hundred, and the rest will be added to Freebridge Marshland. This is part of the grand scheme, noticed at page 517 [History of King's Lynn section]. Freebridge-Lynn affords a pleasing contrast to the flat district of Marshland on the opposite side of the Ouse, having an undulated surface, rising, in picturesque swells, from the marshes on the coast, and on the rivers Ouse, Nar, and several smaller streams. The soil is of different kinds, being in some parts rich and loamy, and in others a light steril sand; indeed, the latter prevails either on the surface or as a substratum, throughout the whole district, and much of it is of a whitish colour, well adapted for the manufacture of glass, for which purpose large quantities are regularly shipped at Lynn. Many of the commons have been enclosed during the last forty years, but there still remain here several extensive sandy heaths, in a state of nature, or partially planted; and one of them, between Castle-Rising and Dersingham, forms a prolific rabbit warren of 1,900 acres; and the abrupt acclivities by which it rises from the marshes, bear evident marks of having been, at some distant period, the boundary of the ocean, the tides of which once flowed up to the decayed borough of Castle-Rising, from whence a small but once navigable stream still flows westward to Lynn Deeps.

Indeed, marine productions are found in the gravel pits, in various parts of the Hundred; and the rounded cobbles, pebbles, flints, and other stones got in them, for the reparation of the roads, are similar to those thrown up by the tides, on the beach near Hunstanton, Brancaster, and Wells. At the Norman Conquest, this Hundred was a fee of the Crown, but was granted by the Conqueror to his butler, William de Albani.

The Hundred Court was anciently held at Flitcham, on a remarkable hill or tumulus, surrounded with a ditch, in the form of a square; but it was afterwards held under an oak tree, at Gaywood, whence it was removed to Fitton Oak, in the parish of Wiggenhall St. Germain, where it was continued till 1710, when the Duke of Norfolk was lord paramount.

Petty Sessions are now held at Hillington, on the 1st and 3rd Mondays in every month, before the Magistrates of the Hundred, to whom B. Aldham and Son, of Lynn, are clerks.

The Hundred contains many large and well built villages, and 34 parishes, of which the following is an enumeration, shewing their population in 1841, the annual value of their land and buildings, as assessed to the County Rate in 1843, and their territorial extent, exclusive of wastes and roads.

The Annual Value of the Hundred, as assessed to the Property Tax, was £69,631 in 1815; and £88,422 in 1842.

FREEBRIDGE-LYNN UNION comprises all the parishes in the foregoing Table, except Anmer and Dersingham, which are in Docking Union. These 32 parishes had 12,580 inhabitants in 1841, and extend over an area of 111 square miles. Their average annual expenditure for the relief of the poor, &c. during the three years preceding the formation of the Union, was £8,952. In 1838, it was £5,149; and in 1839, £5,369. These sums include salaries, &c. In 1842, the sums expended solely for the relief of in and out door poor, amounted to £3,833.

The UNION WORKHOUSE is at Gayton, and was built in 1836, at the cost of £5,146. It has room for 150 paupers, but has seldom more than from 70 to 100. Thirty-six guardians are elected yearly, viz: two each for Castle-Acre, Gaywood, Grimston, and Great Massingham; and one for each of the other parishes.

GALLOW HUNDRED

Is a tract of rich soil, and highly diversified country, extending 15 miles in length from east to west, and varying from 8 to 5 miles in breadth; being bounded on the north by Brothercross, North-Greenhoe, and Holt Hundreds; on the east by Eynesford; on the south by Launditch; and on the west by Freebridge-Lynn and Smithdon Hundreds.

It is watered by the Wensum, and several brooks, which form the source of that river, flowing eastward through a fine vale, by East Rudham, Fakenham, Great Ryburgh, &c.; and from Little Snoring, Barsham, &c., another stream flows northward through the adjoining Hundred to the sea, near Stiffkey.

Henry I. gave Gallow and Brothercross to the Earl of Warren and Surrey, who then held Norwich Castle. Gallow is supposed to have its name from a hill near Dunton, where the Hundred Court was held.

It is in Docking and Briningham Police Divisions; and contains 31 parishes, of which 18 are in Burnham Deanery, and 13 in Toftrees Deanery; the former in the Archdeaconry of Norfolk, and the latter in that of Norwich. Petty Sessions are held at the Crown Inn, Fakenham, every alternate Saturday. Mr. John Overton is clerk to the magistrates.

Norfolk Hundreds

NORTH GREENHOE HUNDRED

Is of an irregular oblong figure, extending nine miles in length along the sea-coast, and averaging seven miles in breadth from north to south, -- being bounded on the east by Holt Hundred; on the south by Gallow; and on the west by Brothercross.

The soil is generally light, but well cultivated, and the face of the country is beautifully diversified, and seen to great advantage from Great Snoring church, where the prospect to the north is highly picturesque, and is terminated by the ocean. A substratum of fine marl is found in almost every part of it, and the whole district abounds in all sorts of game.

It is watered by the river which flows through a fertile vale from Snoring to the ocean, near Stiffkey. Its name is supposed to be a corruption of Green-hill, - the Hundred court being anciently held on such an eminence. The royalties of the whole Hundred, with the lordship of Wighton, were possessed by the Crown in the reigns of Edward the Confessor, and William the Conqueror, but were subsequently granted in fee to various families, though a court of the Queen's Duchy of Lancaster is still held at Wighton.

Petty Sessions are held at Little Walsingham, on the first Monday of every month; and at Wells on the nearest middle Monday of every month. The magistrates' clerk is Mr. Thos. Garwood, of Wells. Little Walsingham has also Quarter Sessions.

The whole Hundred, except Cockthorpe and Field-Dalling, is in the Deanery of Walsingham, and comprises sixteen parishes, of which the following is an enumeration, shewing their population in 1841, the annual value of their land and buildings, as assessed to the County Rate in 1843, and their territorial extent, in assessable acres:--

* Great Snoring included 81 persons in the Union Workhouse; Little Walsingham, 50 in the House of Correction; and Wells, 49 in Vessels. From Hindringham, 63 persons had emigrated to Canada since 1831.

The Annual Value of the Hundred, as assessed to the Property Tax, was £37,102 in 1815; and £45,413 in 1842.

WALSINGHAM UNION comprises all the 16 parishes in North Greenhoe Hundred; 24 parishes in Gallow Hundred, (see page 647; [this is in Gallow Hundred description]) and 10 parishes in Holt Hundred, which see. These 50 parishes extend over an area of 121 square miles, or 72,493 acres; and had in 1841, 20,960 inhabitants, of whom 10,121 were males, and 10,839 females.

Their average annual expenditure from 1832 to 1835, was £21,497; but since the formation of the Union, it has been reduced to about half that sum. The UNION WORKHOUSE is at Great Snoring, and was finished in 1838, at the cost of £5,903. It has room for 300 inmates; but had only 81 in July 1841, and 169 in January, 1845.

Mr. John Overton, of Fakenham, is Union Clerk and Supt. Registrar; and Mr. Robt. Platten is master of the Workhouse. The relieving officers are - Mr. Henry Scales, of Fakenham; and Mr. Thos. Webb, of Wells. The Rev. R. Leeder is chaplain. Seven surgeons are employed by the Union, and among them the three following are Registrars of Births and Deaths, viz:- Mr. G. Damant, for Fakenham District; Mr. C. Adcock, for Walsingham District; and Mr. J. Young, for Wells District.

GRIMSHOE HUNDRED

Is about 14 miles in length, and varies from 6 to 8 in breadth, bounded on the south by the Little Ouse river, which divides it from Suffolk; on the east of[sic] Shropham and Wayland, on the north by South-Greenhoe, and on the west by Clackclose Hundred. It is intersected and partly bounded on the north by the river Wissey, which, like the Ouse, is navigable for small craft. Its soil is chiefly sand, upon a substratum of chalk and flint; and much of it is still in open sheep walks and heaths, abounding in rabbits, except the western end, which forms part of the marshes and fens of the Great Bedford Level. (See page 608[in the Clackclose Hundred description].) The rabbits from the various warrens here, are, among epicures, distinguished for their delicious flavour, and still known by the name of Methwold or "Muel rabbits," though the large heath in that extensive parish was enclosed and cultivated in the early part of the present century.

Gun flints and whiting are manufactured at Brandon, a market town, on the Suffolk side of the Little Ouse, and at the south-east extremity of Grimshoe is the Borough of Thetford. The whole Hundred is comprised (together with South-Greenhoe,) in the Deanery of Cranwich, and archdeaconry of Norfolk; and its Petty Sessions are held on the first and third Mondays of every month, at the Crown Inn, Mundford. Mr. Robert Sewell, of Swaffham, is clerk to the Magistrates.

From its number of tumuli, it is supposed to have been a great seat of war between the Saxons and Danes. On the west-side of Weeting, is a bank and ditch, extending several miles, called the Fen-dyke, or Foss; and about two miles east of that village, on a rising ground, is a large Encampment, of a semi-circular form, comprising about twelve acres, and having numerous deep pits, dug in the quincunx form, and capable of concealing a large army from the view of persons passing the neighbouring roads. It has near it a long tumulus, and is commonly called Grime's Graves, from some Danish or Saxon general, who possessed and gave name to this Hundred, which contains 16 parishes, of which the following is an enumeration, shewing their population in 1841, the annual value of their lands and buildings, as assessed to the County Rate in 1843, and their territorial extent, in assessable acres.

+ Including wastes, this Hundred comprises more than 60,000 acres. Its population, in 1831, was 6380. Its annual value, as assessed to the property tax, was £40,244, in 1815, and £45,372 in 1842. The total annual value for 1842, includes £84 for a small part of Brandon, assessed with this Hundred.

HAPPING HUNDRED

Is of a triangular figure, stretching about eleven miles along the seashore, from Winterton Ness to Walcot, and bounded on the south by West Flegg and Walsham Hundreds; and on the west by Tunstead Hundred; two of its boundaries being about eleven miles, and the other nine miles in length.

The villages are mostly surrounded by low marshes, intersected by numerous broads, or lakes, connected by rivulets and drains, flowing southward, into two channels, to the Bure and the Thurne, and opening a direct navigation to Yarmouth for boats of 14 tons, from almost every part of this Hundred, the greater portion of which was formerly watery meadows, open commons, and extensive rabbit-warrens; but the grounds are now well drained, and all enclosed, except a few small warrens, and several allotments awarded for the use of the poor. The drain waters are pumped from the lower levels by a number of wind-mills. Happing Hundred has suffered considerably from the encroachments of the ocean, though it appears now to be pretty well protected by the high ridges of sand-hills drifted on the coast, and the occasional assistance of a few men employed to repair the breaches.

This Hundred forms, with Tunstead, the Deanery of Waxton or Waxham, in the Archdeaconry of Norwich, and was united with that Hundred, (except North Walsham,) for the support of the poor, in the 25th of Geo. III., when a House of Industry was erected, for the incorporated parishes, at Smallburgh. (See page 474; and Petty Sessions, page 475. [Both in Tunstead Hundred])

Happing Hundred contains 16 parishes, of which the following is an enumeration, shewing their population in 1841, their annual value, as assessed to the County Rate, in 1843, and their territorial extent, in assessable acres.

HOLT HUNDRED

Is a highly diversified district, presenting some of the boldest scenery in Norfolk; though next the ocean it has a flat shore and a broad tract of low salt marshes. It is about nine miles in length and breadth, except at its southern extremity, where it is only six miles broad: being bounded, on the north by the sea; on the east, by North and South Erpingham; on the south, by Eynesford; and on the west, by North Greenhoe.

The town of Holt stands on a broad and flat eminence, extending eastward, between Kelling and Hunworth, to Upper Sherringham and Aylmerton, and formerly presenting a wide waste of brown heath, over which the north and north-east winds, unchecked in their course from the ocean, blew with chilling violence; but this bleakness has been much ameliorated, since the Holt and other enclosures, by the extensive plantations of H. and R. H. Gurney, Esqrs., and those of W. H. C. Hardy, Esq., and several other landowners.

Many handsome residences have been built, during the present century, in various parts of the Hundred, which is intersected by the whole length of the small river Glaven, which passes, by a very circuituous course of more than thirteen miles, to the ocean, near Cley, after watering a picturesque and well-wooded valley, and supplying four water-mills and two fine lakes, one of which, (a little below the river's source, near Bodham,) is used as a decoy for wild ducks, which, with geese and other aquatic birds, frequent this coast in considerable numbers.

This Hundred, except Swanton-Novers, forms the Deanery of Holt, together with Field-Dalling and Cockthorpe, in North Greenhoe.

It contains 28 parishes of which the following is an enumeration, shewing their population in 1841, the annual value of their lands and buildings, as assessed to the County Rate in 1843, and their territorial extent, in assessable acres.

Petty Sessions are held at the Feathers Inn, Holt, every Saturday; and Mr. J. Ransom is clerk to the magistrates.

LAUNDITCH HUNDRED

[In the original this is LAUNDICTH]

Is of an irregular, quadrangular figure, averaging about 12 miles in length and breadth, and bounded on the north by Gallow, on the east by Eynesford, on the south by Mitford and South Greenhoe, and on the west by Freebridge-Lynn Hundred.

It is a highly cultivated district, rising in some places in bold and picturesque swells, with many thriving plantations and handsome mansions, and watered by the Wensum, the Nar, and several smaller streams, which rise within its limits. It takes its name from a long ditch and bank extending from Wendling-car to the low lands near Mileham, and supposed to have been made for the purpose of carrying off the drain water. At the point where this ditch crosses the Norwich road, the Hundred court was anciently held.

Launditch, (with the exception of Colkirk and Hoe,) forms the Deanery of Brisley, in the Archdeaconry of Norwich. The Launditch Society for encouraging good conduct, industrious habits, &c. among servants and labourers, holds its annual meetings for awarding prizes, &c. at Litcham, in October.

Petty Sessions for Launditch Hundred are held at Litcham, on the first Wednesday, and at North Elmham on the third Wednesday of every month. Mr. Charles Wright is clerk to the magistrates.

This Hundred contains thirty-three parishes, of which the following is an enumeration, shewing their population in 1841, the annual value of their lands and buildings, as assessed to the County Rate in 1843, and their territorial extent, in assessable acres.

Norfolk Hundreds

MITFORD HUNDRED

The most central division of Norfolk, comprehends an area of about ten miles in length and six in breadth, bounded on the north by Eynesford; on the east, by Forehoe; on the south, by Wayland; and on the west; by South Greenhoe and Launditch Hundreds. It formerly abounded in extensive commons, nearly the whole of which have been enclosed during the last fifty years, so that it is now a highly cultivated and well wooded district.

At the Domesday survey, it belonged to the monastery founded in the Isle of Ely, by Ethelfreda, a princess of East Anglia; from which it passed to the See of Ely, with which it remained till granted to the Crown by an Act of Parliament in the first of Elizabeth. It has since passed to various lords, and forms, with Forehoe Hundred, the Deanery of Hingham, in the Archdeaconry of Norfolk.

It is in East Dereham Police Division, and petty sessions are held in that town every alternate Friday. "THE HUNDRED OF MITFORD SOCIETY for promoting and rewarding good conduct, and encouraging industrious habits, amongst Servants, Cottagers, and Labourers," is a very useful institution, supported by annual subscriptions, which are given in prizes to the most deserving, at the annual meeting held at Dereham, generally on the last Thursday in October.

Mitford contains eighteen parishes, of which the following is an enumeration, shewing their population in 1841, the annual value of their lands and buildings, as assessed to the county rate in 1843, and their territorial extent, in assessable acres:-

+ The annual value of the Hundred, as assessed to the property tax, was £46,000, in 1815, and £64,962 in 1842. Its population, in 1831, was 11,528.

MITFORD AND LAUNDITCH UNION. -- All the fifty parishes of the Hundreds of Mitford and Launditch, were incorporated for the support of their poor, in 1775; but in 1801, the parish of East Dereham obtained an act by which it was separated from the incorporation. In 1836, the whole of these parishes, with ten parishes in Eynesford Hundred, were formed into an Union under the new poor law. These sixty parishes comprise an area of about 110,000 acres, and had in 1841 a population of 28,493 inhabitants, of whom 14,095 were males and 14,398 females.

The House of Industry, which belonged to the old incorporation, is at Gressenhall, and was built in 1776 and '7, at the cost of £16,242, including the purchase of 61A. 2R. 35P. of land. In 1835, it was valued at nearly £10,000, and in the following year, about £5000 was expended in repairs, alterations, &c., so as to adapt it as the Union Workhouse. The average annual expenditure of the sixty parishes of this extensive Union, from 1832 to 1835, was £26,684. In 1842, their expenditure, solely for the relief of in and out-door poor, was £9815, and in 1843, £9021. The number of persons in the Workhouse, in July, 1841, was 242. On March 18th, 1844, there were 320 paupers in the house; and at one period in 1800, it had as many as 670 inmates. They are maintained and clothed at the weekly cost of 2s. 4d. per head.

Though this large Workhouse stands in a high and healthy situation, cholera and scarlet fever, in 1834, swept away one-sixth of its inmates. Part of the land is enclosed as a burial ground, and the rest is cultivated by spade husbandry.

Mr. George Fras. and Mrs. Whelan are master and matron of the Workhouse; Mr. Chas. Wright, of Litcham, is clerk to the Board of Guardians; the Rev. Jph. Thompson is chaplain; and Messrs. Fras. Reynolds, Thos. Mendham, and John Francis Reynolds, are the relieving officers. Mr. Charles Wright is also SUPERINTENDENT REGISTRAR; and Mr. W. M. Warcup, of East Dereham, is Registrar of Marriages for the whole Union. The DISTRICTS and Registrars of Births and Deaths are - Litcham, Mr. P. Raven; Elmham, J. Goshawk; Bawdeswell, C. Baker; Mattishall, H. Daveney; Shipdham, J. R. Rivett; and East Dereham, W. M. Warcup.

SMITHDON HUNDRED

Is a fine agricultural district, forming the most north-western division of Norfolk, averaging about ten miles in length and breadth, and bounded on the north and west by the Ocean and the Wash, on the south by Freebridge-Lynn, and on the east by Gallow and Brothercross Hundreds.

The surface is in many places picturesquely undulated, and the soil being mostly a deep rich clay, is naturally fertile, except in some of the higher grounds, where a light sand prevails, and was formerly in large open fields, most of which have been enclosed since 1761, when 5,000 acres of waste, near Snettisham, was fenced and allotted by act of Parliament.

The lands near the shore are chiefly salt marshes, which are often inundated at spring tides; and at other periods, a strong gale from the north-west has sometimes brought in the water with such force and rapidity, that whole flocks of sheep and herds of cattle have been lost. It is, however, now proposed to recover a large portion of the Great Estuary, called the Wash, from the incursions of the tides, as noticed at page 517 [see History of King's Lynn section]. If this grand scheme is carried into effect, a tract of fine alluvial marshes, about five miles in breadth, will be added to the western side of this Hundred; and the lofty sea-cliff, at Hunstanton, will then be that distance from the ocean.

At the Domesday survey, this division was in two Hundreds, called Smithdon and Docking.

Petty Sessions are held at Snettisham on the second, and at Docking on the last Monday of every month. Mr. Anthony Blyth is clerk to the magistrates.

This Hundred belongs to a great number of freeholders and copyholders; but Henry L'Estrange Styleman Le Strange, Esq., is lord of nearly half of the manors.

DOCKING UNION, formed in 1835, comprises all the 18 parishes of Smithdon Hundred; the 9 parishes of Brothercross Hundred; the parishes of Anmer and Dersingham, in Freebridge-Lynn; and those of Bagthorpe, Barmer, Broomsthorpe, Houghton, Syderstone, East Rudham, and West Rudham, in Gallow Hundred.

The 36 parishes of this Union, comprise an area of 128 square miles, and had 16,930 inhabitants, in 1841, of whom 8,364 were males, and 8,566 females. Their average annual expenditure on their poor, &c., from 1832 to 1835, was £16,840; but in 1838 it was only £9,033; and since then it has been reduced to little more than £8,000. The Union Workhouse is at Docking, nearly in the centre of the Union, and is an extensive range of brick building, erected in 1836, at the cost of about £9,000, including the furniture, &c. It was opened in December, 1836, and has room for 513 paupers, but in summer it has seldom more than 100.

Norfolk Hundreds

White's History, Gazetteer, and Directory of Norfolk 1845

TUNSTEAD HUNDRED

Is of a crooked oblong figure, extending about 13 miles southward from the sea coast, between Happisburgh and Mundesley, to the river Bure, and averaging from five to six miles in breadth. It is generally a well cultivated district of rich loamy land, highly productive in wheat and barley, and broken into a pleasing variety of hills, vales, and plains, interspersed with tracts of fertile marshes, and watered by several "broads" and rivulets, most of which are tributary to the small river Ant.

This river intersects and bounds this Hundred during its whole course from Antingham to the Bure, and was formerly navigable only as high as Dilham; but by deepening the channel, and cutting a canal, upwards of seven miles in length, in 1825-6, at the cost of £32,000, the navigation has been extended to North Walsham, and the bounds of Antingham; thus affording an easy transit for the produce of this and adjoining Hundreds, to Yarmouth.

TUNSTEAD AND HAPPING HUNDREDS form the Deanery of Waxham or Waxton, in the Archdeanery of Norwich, and their 24 parishes, except North Walsham, (which is in Erpingham Union,) where[sic] INCORPORATED for the support of their poor, in the 25th of Geo. III., when they erected a HOUSE OF INDUSTRY, at Smallburgh, which was altered and a little enlarged in 1836, and has room for about 500 paupers. Attached to this large Workhouse is 24A. of arable land. The expenditure of the 41 incorporated parishes, on their in and out-door poor, was £4367, in 1839; £4381, in 1842; and £1433, for the quarter ending September, 1844. They comprise an area of about 57,700 acres, and a population of 15,436 souls, of whom 7588 were males, and 7848 females.

John Postle, Esq., is chairman, and Mr. Jno. Barnard, of Worstead, is clerk to the Board of Guardians and Directors. Mr Washington Smith is master of the Wockhouse[sic] and Superintendent Registrar, for the incorporated parishes. The Rev. Thos. Dix is chaplain; and Messrs. James Bean and Robt. Rising, are relieving officers and registrars of births and deaths; the former for Tunstead District, and the latter for Happing District.

Tunstead Hundred is bounded on the north by the ocean and North Erpingham, on the east by Happing, on the south by Walsham, and on the west by South Erpingham and Taverham Hundreds. It contains 26 parishes, of which the following is an enumeration, shewing their population in 1841, the annual value of their lands and buildings, as assessed to the County Rate, in 1843, and their territorial extent, in assessable acres.

+ Tunstead is in Aylsham and Ludham Police Divisions. Its population, in 1831, was 10,593; and its annual value, as assessed to the property tax, was £39,139, in 1815, and £50,595 in 1842.

PETTY SESSIONS, for Tunstead and Happing Hundreds, are held every Thursday, at North Walsham, and every Tuesday at the Workhouse, in Smallburgh. Mr. Philip Millard, of the former place, is clerk to the magistrates. The TUNSTEAD AND HAPPING AGRICULTURAL ASSOCIATION holds its meetings at North Walsham, where there is also a Farmers' Club.

Norfolk Hundreds

WALSHAM HUNDRED

Is a long, narrow district, of an irregular figure, bounded on the south-east by the river Yare; on the north, by the river Bure, which separates it from Tunstead Hundred; and on the south and west, by Blofield and Taverham Hundreds; extending about 15 miles north-west from the confluence of the two rivers near Yarmouth, and varying from two to eight miles in breadth.

A considerable portion of the soil is low marshy land, and was frequently subject to inundation, particularly in the vale of the Bure, which extends the whole length of the Hundred; but the commons and marshes have been nearly all enclosed, and well drained, during the present century.

At the Norman Conquest, this Hundred was called Walesha, from the watery nature of its soil, and was then held by the Crown. Henry I. transferred a great part of it to Eborard, Bishop of Norwich, as a life-hold, at an annual rent of 100 shillings. In the time of Edward II., John de Clavering was seized of many manors here and in Blofield, and one court was held for both these Hundreds, which together form the Deanery of Blofield, in the Archdeaconry of Norwich.

A House of Industry was erected at Acle, in 1788, for seven parishes, to which ten other parishes were afterwards united, but the house was burnt down in Nov. 1834.

Walsham Hundred is crossed both by the Norwich and Yarmouth Railway and Turnpike, and contains thirteen parishes, of which the following is an enumeration, shewing their population, in 1841, their annual value, as assessed to the County Rate in 1843, and their territorial extent, in assessable acres.

PARLIAMENTARY REPRESENTATION OF THE COUNTY AND OF THE BOROUGHS

Before the passing of the Reform Bill, in 1832, Norfolk sent twelve representatives to Parliament, namely, two for the county, two for the city of Norwich, and two for each of the boroughs of Yarmouth, Lynn, Thetford, and Castle Rising; but by that Act Castle Rising was disfranchised, and the county was divided into two divisions, each sending two knights to Parliament.

Thetford and Yarmouth have since been disfranchised, the former by 31-32 Vict. c. 48 s. 43, and the latter by 30-31 Vict. c. 102 s. 12; and the county was further divided by the Reform Act of 1867 into West, South, and North divisions, each returning two members.

The following table shows the area of each division and borough, with their population in 1881 and the number of electors in 1883.

RAILWAYS

Norfolk is traversed in all directions by railways, principally belonging to the Great Eastern system. Under an Act passed in 1862, the Eastern Counties, Norfolk, Newmarket, Eastern Union, East Anglian, Wells and Fakenham, and East Suffolk Railway Companies were amalgamated. Since then the East Norfolk Railway Company has been amalgamated with the Great Eastern.

From Norwich, the capital of the county, are two main lines to London, the one running through Trowse, Hethersett, Wymondham, Attleborough, Eccles, Harling, and Thetford, to Ely and Cambridge; and the other through Swainsthorpe, Flordon, Forncett, Tivetshall, Burston, and Diss, to Ipswich and Colchester. These lines have a separate terminus at Norwich, the one at Thorpe, and the other at St. Stephen's Gate, Norwich, but they are connected by a loop line, running through Lakenham, a mile to the south-east of the city.

From these main lines are several important branches. One from Wymondham to Wells runs northward through Kimberley, Hardingham, Thuxton and Yaxham, to Dereham, a junction station, and thence to Elmham, Ryburgh, Fakenham, Walsingham, and Wells. From Dereham there is a line running westward through Wendling, Fransham, Dunham, Swaffham, Narborough, Bilney, and Middleton, to Lynn. From Lynn, there is a line running south through Watlington, Downham, and Denver to Ely; and from this line on the west is a branch to Wisbech, and on the east to Stoke Ferry. North of Lynn is the Lynn and Hunstanton Line, worked by the Great Eastern, running through N. Wootton, Wolferton, Dersingham, Snettisham, and Heacham to Hunstanton. From Heacham is a line passing through Sedgeford, Docking, Burnham, and Holkham to Wells, where it joins the line from Wells to Wymondham, which in 1880 was put in connection with the Ipswich and Colchester line to London, by the construction of a short line from Wymondham through Ashwellthorpe to Forncett. From Swaffham a line, which has been taken over by the Great Eastern, runs through Holm Hale, Ashill, Watton, and Wretham, to Roudham, where it effects a junction with the main line to London via Cambridge, and with the Thetford and Bury line.

The Great Eastern system has been of late years much extended in East Norfolk, first by the construction of a line from Norwich to Cromer through Salhouse, Wroxham, Worstead, North Walsham, and Gunton; and secondly by a line between this and the Wells and Wymondham line, running from Wroxham through Coltishall, Buxton, Lamas, Aylsham, Cawston, Reepham, and Foulsham to Broom Green, near Elmham. In addition to the old line from Norwich to Yarmouth, through Whitlingham, Brundall, Buckenham, Santley [should be Cantley], and Reedham, the Great Eastern have now just completed another railway branching therefrom at Brundall, and running through Acle and along the Bure Valley to Yarmouth. From Reedham there is a branch line to Lowestoft, by way of Haddiscoe, where it is crossed by the East Suffolk line, which runs from Southtown station at Yarmouth through the Suffolk Hundreds of Mutford and Lothingland to Beccles and Halesworth. From Beccles, along a portion of the southern boundary of Norfolk, is another Great Eastern branch, the Waveney Valley, which passes through Bungay, Earsham, Redenhall, Harleston, and Pulham to Tivetshall, on the main line from Norwich to London, via Ipswich. The number of miles of line in Norfolk belonging to or worked by the Great Eastern is about 310.

During the last few years two other companies have obtained powers to construct lines in Norfolk: the Yarmouth and North Norfolk Light Railway Company, and the Lynn and Fakenham Railway Company. The former constructed a line from Yarmouth to Caister, Ormesby, Hemsby, Martham, Potter Heigham, Catfield, Stalham, and North Walsham; and the other a line from Lynn to Grimston, Hillington, Massingham, Reedham [probably Rougham], Raynham, and Fakenham. In 1880 and 1881 powers were given to the Lynn and Fakenham Railway Company by Parliament to extend their line from Fakenham to Thursford, Melton, Saxthorpe, Aylsham, Felmingham, and North Walsham, effecting a junction with the Yarmouth and North Norfolk Company; from Melton to Hindolvestone, Guestwick, Whitwell, Lenwade, Attlebridge, Drayton, Cossey, Hellesdon, and Norwich; from Melton (northward) to Holt and Kelling, with branches to Weybourne, Sherringham, Runton, and Cromer, and another branch to Salthouse, Cley, and Blakeney. These companies, amalgamated in 1882, as the Eastern and Midlands Company, have 125 miles of line in the county.

The Midland and Great Northern have a joint line running into the county at Lynn from Lincolnshire.

Description of the County

NORFOLK, the most eastern division of England, is an extensive maritime county, comprising 412,664 inhabitants, and about 1,300,000 acres of land, divided into thirty-three Hundreds, and about 740 Parishes, - including the City of Norwich, which forms, with its precincts, a Town and County of itself. Compared with the other counties of England, it ranks the fourth in territorial extent, and the eighth in population.

It is celebrated for the diversity and high cultivation of its soil; for the abundance and excellence of its agricultural productions; for its crape, bombasin, and other manufactures of silk and worsted; for its herring and mackerel fisheries; and for its numerous antiquities, market towns, villages and parishes; but in some cases. two or three of the latter are united either ecclesiastically, or for the support of the poor.

It lies between 52 deg. 17 min. and 52 deg. 56 min. North Latitude, and 1 min. and 1 deg. 45 min. East Longitude from the meridian of Greenwich; - being of an oval figure, extending about 70 miles from east to west, and 42 miles in the broadest parts from north to south. It is about 180 miles in circumference, and the northern half of it is bounded by the German Ocean and the Great Estuary, called The Wash; whilst its southern side is divided from Suffolk by the Waveney and Little Ouse rivers; and from Cambridgeshire, chiefly by the Great Ouse, Welney, and Nene, - the latter of which, as well as the Great Ouse, falls into the Metaris Æstuarium, or The Wash, which divides Norfolk from Lincolnshire. Thus surrounded by marine and river boundaries, Norfolk may be considered almost an island.

Though it is generally considered a champaign district, the surface in many places, rises in bold undulations, and sinks into picturesque vales, especially in the centre of the county, and on the coast, which is nearly 90 miles in extent from Yarmouth to Lynn, and has near Cromer and Hunstanton lofty perpendicular cliffs.

A large portion of the southern side of the county is in flat but well cultivated marshes; and in the western and some other parts are extensive tracts of light sandy land, rising boldly from the marshes and fens, which are now well drained, and many of them highly productive. Though nearly 200,000 acres of commons and sandy heaths have been enclosed during the last 70 years, there are still in different parts of the county, extensive open sheep walks, and rabbit warrens, in some places much improved by thriving plantations.

Parliamentary Divisions

Before the passing of the Reform Bill, in 1832, Norfolk sent twelve representatives to parliament, viz:- two for the county, and two each for the City of Norwich, and the Boroughs of Yarmouth, Lynn, Thetford, and Castle-Rising; but by that great public act, the latter borough was disfranchised, and the county was separated into two divisions, each returning two Knights of the shire to parliament.

The EASTERN DIVISION comprises the eighteen Hundreds marked thus *, in the list, at page 14 [these are: Blofield, Clavering, Depwade, Diss, Earsham, Erpingham North, Erpingham South, Eynesford, Flegg East, Flegg West, Forehoe, Happing, Henstead, Humbleyard, Loddon, Taverham, Tunstead, and Walsham], and its Polling Places are Norwich, Yarmouth, Reepham, North Walsham, Long Stratton, and Loddon. Norwich is the principal place of election.

The WESTERN DIVISION comprises the other fifteen Hundreds of the county [these are: Brothercross, Clackclose, Freebridge-Lynn, Freebridge-Marshland, Gallow, Greenhoe North, Greenhoe South, Grimshoe, Guiltcross, Holt, Launditch, Mitford, Shropham, Smithdon, and Wayland], and its Polling Places are Lynn, East Dereham, Fakenham, Downham, Thetford, and Swaffham; the latter of which is the principal place of election.

At the first election under the Reform Bill, Norfolk sent to parliament seven whigs and five tories; but its present members consist of nine tories and three whigs.

RAILWAYS, TURNPIKES and ROADS

RAILWAYS. - Norfolk has already a Railway from Norwich to Yarmouth; and another is in rapid progress from Norwich to Brandon, to connect the county with the great lines now traversing the kingdom. The former was opened in 1844; and the latter will be completed in 1845. As noticed at pages 81, 292, 308, 400, and 520 [the entries for Norwich, Yarmouth, East Dereham, Thetford, and King's Lynn], various railroads are projected, by which it is proposed to intersect the county in nearly every direction, and to obtain a more direct communication with London, Ipswich, &c., than the Norwich and Brandon line affords. These schemes are now (March 1845) under the consideration of Parliament; - some will, no doubt, be sanctioned, and others postponed or abandoned; indeed, we think several of them could never be made profitable speculations.

The TURNPIKES and other public ROADS in Norfolk, are better than those of most other counties in England, - being generally raised higher than the adjacent lands, well drained by trenches on each side, and having a firm bottom composed of gravel flint, and chalk; which it has already been seen are found within a few feet of the surface in almost every part of the county. Charles II., "who never said a silly thing, nor ever did a wise one," said, when on a visit to the Earl of Yarmouth, at Oxnead, in 1671, "that Norfolk ought to be cut out in strips, to make roads for the rest of the kingdom," - alluding, no doubt, to the surface being generally level. The road from Norwich to Thetford was the first turnpike formed in the county, - being made under acts passed in 1694 and '5. The first toll-gate in England was erected on the turnpike from London to Harwich, in 1679.

CLIMATE

From Norfolk being exposed to the ocean on the north, and to a large extent of marshes and fens on the south and south-west, the air is extremely sharp in winter and in the early part of spring. North and north-easterly winds are more prevalent than in any other parts of the kingdom, and vegetation is consequently backward. The contiguity to the sea and to the marshes and fens, and the vapours brought from Holland, account for the frequent rains and storms during the summer months, but they are seldom of so long duration as in more hilly districts.

In the hundreds of Marshland and Clackclose, and other fenny parts of the county, the air is not only cold but exceedingly damp, and the inhabitants are subject to intermittent fevers; but as the fens and marshes are now well-drained, these endemical agues are much less frequent than formerly, when strangers on their first residence were generally attacked with them, and were proverbially said to be 'arrested by the bailiff of Marshland.'

The great upland to the east and north-east, consisting chiefly of a sandy or gravelly soil, is peculiarly salubrious and pleasant.

The men of Norfolk are generally of a light wiry make, formed for activity rather than strength, and the same may be said of the native breeds of horses and cattle. Marshall, an agricultural writer about 100 years ago, mentions his astonishment at the activity and quantity of work performed by Norfolk men and horses; and in Chaucer, and many early authors, the same peculiarities are noticed.

COUNTY COURTS

COUNTY COURTS. - For County Court purposes, Norfolk is principally included in two circuits - the Norfolk circuit, No. 32, and the Suffolk circuit, No. 33 - though a few places are in Wisbech county court district (No. 32), one in Ely district (No. 32), and one in Holbeach district (No. 17). Some of the parishes, &c., in Thetford, Harleston, Diss and Eye, and Yarmouth county court districts are in Suffolk, while courts for places in Norfolk are held at Beccles and Bungay, in Suffolk.

The judge of the Norfolk circuit is E. Plumer Price, Esq., Q.C., of 69 Milsom Road, Kensington, London; and of the Suffolk circuit, Sir F. Roxburgh, Q.C., 53 Westbourne Terrace, London, W. The judge at Holbeach is S. Jones, Esq., LL.D., Newport House, Lincoln.

FENS, &c.

Note that only part of this section has been transcribed so far.

The SMEETH and FEN, comprising 7263A. 1R. 34P., in the southern part of Marshland, have been drained and divided among the owners of 525 common-rights, under the powers of an Act of Parliament passed in 1796, and at an expense of upwards of £50,000; of which £10,000 were expended in 1833, in cutting a wide and deep drain, 4½ miles long, from Tilney Fen-End to the Eau-Brink Cut, near St. German's, for the purpose of superseding the four windmills, which formerly pumped the water from the lower into the higher levels. A drainage rate is charged by the commissioners on the landowners, amounting to about 2s. 7d. per acre per annum.

This extensive and now fertile tract was, from time immemorial, the common of the parishes called the Seven Towns of Marshland, among which the 525 common-rights were divided as follows:- Emneth, 73; Walsoken, 88; West Walton, 62; Walpole St. Peter, 81; Walpole St. Andrew, 25; Terrington St. Clement, 67; Terrington St. John, 41; Tilney All Saints, 33; Tilney St. Lawrence, 22; Tilney-cum-Islington, 19; and Clenchwarton, 14.

The land awarded to each common-right varied from 9 to 15 acres, according to the quality of the soil; and the parochial allotments extend in narrow strips to the southern termination of the fen, distant more than seven miles from some of the parish churches. After the allotment, it was discovered that a piece of land, comprising 11 acres, in the parish of Walpole St. Peter, had been overlooked. It therefore pays rates and taxes to the seven towns, and is now occupied by Mr Henry Hubbard.

The Smeeth, comprising only 1572A. 22P. is on the north side of the fen, and was celebrated as a summer pasture in the time of James I., when a courtier told that monarch, on his coming to the crown of England, 'That if overnight a wand or rod was laid on the ground, by the morning it would be covered with grass of that night's growth;' to which the King jocosely replied, 'That he knew some grounds in Scotland, where, if a horse was put in overnight, they could not see or discern him in the morning.'

The Fen (including the Broad, Short, and Wellmore Fens) comprises 5691A. 1R. 12P., now forming rich arable and meadow land, which before the enclosure was a wild morass abounding in reeds and large pools of water and frequented by numerous flocks of wild fowl, of which great quantities were shot or decoyed by the poor inhabitants of the 'Seven Towns,' who evinced much dissatisfaction at the enclosure, which destroyed their aquatic sports and profits, and all their other interest in the Smeeth and Fen.

Tradition says that, in ancient times, the people had a dispute with lords of the manors respecting their common-rights; when one Hickifric, of gigantic stature, who taking a cart-wheel for a shield, and the axletree for a sword, repelled the invaders. A large gravestone in Tilney churchyard, having upon it a cross so decorated with ornaments as to appear something like a wheel, is still shown by the credulous as the grave of this mythic giant. Comparative mythologists trace this story to the Aryan solar myths.

Norfolk: Gazetteers and Directories

The term gazetteer means "Geographical index or dictionary" and may contain some biographical information about previous inhabitants of a place.

Directories are books containing some of the following:

classified lists of inhabitants of a district
members of trades or professions
a list of the streets in a place (usually only the largest ones)
telephone numbers

which existed at the date of publication. Many also include a short account of the history of the place first. Examples of directory entries are available for a number of Publishers and years so one can ascertain their usefulness.

They have been grouped together because of the difficulty of splitting them into the separate topics of directories and gazetteers. Most of the books contain both so have been listed as follows:

Volumes covering the County or a number of Counties of which Norfolk is one.
Town directories.

Please note that the early directories (pre 1900) do not list every person in a town or village. This is because some were by subscription and others did not justify the cost. Some of these also contain archaic terms and unexplained abbreviations which are not in general use any more. The later Kellys and others (1890s onward) give a far better coverage but generally only include the head of the household.

An increasing number are being reprinted of which some are on fiche.

MILITARY ORGANISATION

Military districts were originally formed in 1792, and were re-formed in 1870, and again in 1882. The regimental districts are a modern subdivision of the county, effected by the Secretary of State for the better management and administration of the affairs connected with the land forces, including the regular army, the militia, and the volunteers.

Each military district is under the command of a general officer, and each regimental district of a colonel. Two battalions of the line, and the militia infantry and the rifle volunteers belonging to each regimental district constitute a brigade. One or other of these battalions of the line is always absent on service in India or some other of the colonies or possessions; the remaining battalion of the line being quartered in some garrison or camp in the United Kingdom.

In many cases a regimental district comprises one entire county, but the larger and more populous counties are divided into two or more regimental districts; and in several cases two or more smaller counties form one regimental district ('Census General Report, 1871').

Norfolk forms a regimental district (No. 9), in the Eastern district (II.), which also comprises Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex (except Tilbury Fort, Purfleet, and Coal House-Point Battery), Hertfordshire, Huntingdonshire, Lincolnshire and Suffolk. The headquarters of the district are at Colchester, and the officer commanding is Major-General R. White, C.B., The troops quartered in the command are - Cavalry, 7th Hussars, Colchester; Artillery, 3rd Brigade, D and E batteries, Ipswich; 4th Brigade, Q Battery, Colchester; No. 1 Battery, Eastern Division, depôt, Eastern Division; Engineers, Commissariat and Transport; Infantry, 1st Battalion Royal Fusiliers, Hounslow; 1st Battalion the Norfolk Regiment.

The ARTILLERY DIVISION has its depôt temporarily at Colchester, Lieut.-Col. H.Y. Wortham.

The ARTILLERY stationed in the Eastern Division are 1st Brigade (Royal Artillery), 2nd Brigade (Prince of Wales's Own Norfolk Artillery Militia), and 3rd Brigade (Suffolk Artillery Militia). The Artillery Volunteer Corps are 1st (Norfolk), 2nd (1st Essex) 3rd (1st Lincolnshire). The 1st Brigade consists of nine batteries, which are stationed at various places. The 2nd (Prince of Wales's Own) is stationed at Yarmouth, and the 3rd at Ipswich.

The officers of the former are - Hon. Col., Field-Marshall H.R.H. the Prince of Wales, K.G.; Lieut.-Col., Lord Suffield, K.C.B.; Instructor of Artillery, Captain E.R.M. Pratt; Adjutant, Capt. Hon. The headquarters of the NORFOLK REGIMENT (Regimental District No. 9) are at Great Yarmouth, and the regiment comprises 1st and 2nd Battalions (originally 9th Foot), the 1st being at Colchester and the 2nd in Bengal; 3rd Battalion (1st Norfolk Militia) at Norwich; and 4th Battalion (2nd Norfolk Militia) at Great Yarmouth. The uniform is scarlet with white facings. The Volunteer battalions are 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Norfolk. Gen. Sir. H. Bates, K.C.B., is Colonel; and J. Miller, is Lieut.-Col. commanding regimental district.

Norfolk: Hundreds

White's History, Gazetteer, and Directory of Norfolk 1845

This page leads to the Hundred descriptions as described in White's in the year 1845. A more general description of the Hundreds is also available showing their approximate locations in the county.

Many counties were split up for administrative purposes into manageable areas of land. This was usually based on a group of parishes and Norfolk was no different. Each of these groups was called a Hundred. Together all these Hundreds, and a few of the main towns (listed below) which had separate administrations, make up the county.

In White's 1845 directory the layout is such that Norwich appears first, followed by Great Yarmouth and then there is a section for each Hundred with the other Boroughs of Thetford and King's Lynn lying in these. The list below uses a more practical approach of Boroughs followed by Hundreds in alphabetical order.

Each Hundred is then described in terms of its topography, agriculture, ecclesiastical area, poor law administration and courts of law. Transport routes which might include main roads, railways (those existing at that time), canals etc. are noted. Its history and any other topics the compilers deemed of interest were also included.

Following each Hundred description every constituent parish/place is listed with information about its church, owners and inhabitants and other points of note. See the places pages for more information including many transcriptions.

Occupations: Postal

Postmasters, etc, from Kelly's 1900 Directory of Norfolk

The city of Norwich, and the towns such as Holt, King's Lynn, Great Yarmouth, Wymondham, etc, had postmasters, who were in charge of the main post offices, the delivery of post, issuing and paying postal orders, telegraphs, etc.

Towns often also had small sub post offices, so that there was one within a short distance of most people. For example, Great Yarmouth had one main post office, in the charge of Lewis S. Lugg, the postmaster, and 14 sub post offices in the charge of sub-postmasters and sub-postmistresses.

Those villages which were large enough (about 480 of the more than 700 Norfolk places) also had a post office. It was often part of a village shop or business, such as a draper, and was in the charge of a sub-postmaster or sub-postmistress. This was one occupation in which women were well represented. In the list below, more than 100 sub post offices were held by sub-postmistresses.

In the list, no distinction is made between postmasters and sub-postmasters, though it can probably be assumed that all women were sub-postmistresses. Please see the directory for the exact job title.

A typical entry in Kelly's Directory of Norfolk for 1900 is:

Beighton: Post Office.-- James Hubbard, sub-postmaster. Letters through Norwich, via Acle, arrive at 7.45 a.m.; dispatched, 3.30 p.m. No sunday dispatch. Postal orders are issued here, but not paid. The nearest money order & telegraph office is at Acle, 3 miles distant.

Today, there are still main post offices in towns, and sub post offices in villages, but usually only when a village shop has survived. Many village shops have closed because they cannot compete with supermarkets, and closure has also meant the end of the village post office.

Station Masters, etc, from Kelly's 1900 Directory of Norfolk

For each place which had a railway station, the directory shows the person in charge, who was usually the station master, but could also be a master, collector or porter.

The directory sometimes shows the nearest railway station to a village, and therefore repeats the name of the station master. An example is the three entries for James Atkins (the same person) who was the station master for Gunton, but Gunton station was more than 2 miles east of the village, in the parish of Thorpe Market, and was only a mile from Southrepps, so he was shown under all three places in the directory. Another example is Zacchaeus Goodale who is shown twice because Clenchwarton station was in the parish of Tilney All Saints.

UK and Ireland: Directories

Directories were published for many large towns from about 1800, aimed at commercial travellers, though some earlier ones exist. A few decades later such publications were produced covering small towns and rural areas. These directories generally provided a brief description of each town or place covered, plus a listing of prominent residents and of the various tradesmen, and in due course were published annually. As the 19th century progressed directories became more and more comprehensive, and can be of considerable help in locating people and tracing their movements. A growing number of these directories are now being made available online or on CD-ROM.

British Telecom Archives have a number of record collections of value to genealogists. Of particular value is their extensive collection of Telephone Directories, dating from 1880 to the present day, which are available on microfilm in their public searchroom.
