Between 1908 and 1916, John Stabb, an ecclesiologist and photographer who lived in Torquay, published three volumes of Some Old Devon Churches and one of Devon Church Antiquities. A projected second volume of the latter, regarded by Stabb himself as a complement to the former, did not materialize because of his untimely death on August 2nd 1917, aged 52. Collectively, Stabb's four volumes present descriptions of 261 Devon churches and their antiquities.

WILLAND. St. Mary. The church is of 14th century date and consists of chancel, nave, north aisle, south porch, and west tower with a clock and three bells.

There is a very fine rood screen [plate 255] of the square-headed type, the rood loft is carried on a horizontal coving, and here we get an example of what the screens were like at Braunton, Stoke-in-Teignhead, Bow, and East Budleigh before the lofts were removed. They were never intended to have groining like the majority of the Devonshire screens. The effect must have been decidedly top-heavy, and not so pleasing as the light and graceful screens at Kentisbeare, Atherington, and elsewhere, with the beautifully carved fan tracery and elaborately enriched cornices. There is a good deal of the ancient colour and gilding remaining. The ornamentation of the cornice with vine leaves is very good.

The interior of the church was thoroughly restored in 1906, when the carved oak reredos was placed behind the altar; the centre panel is carved with lilies, on one side panel, corn with words "I am the Bread of Life", and on the other side a vine with the words "I am the True Vine". The east window, representing the three Marys, is a memorial to the wife of the Rev. W. C. Coplestone, a former rector.

This important paper was presented at the Association’s July 1902 Bideford meeting. Medieval bishops made money by various means, primarily from the income generated by the lands and estates they controlled. As high-ranking officials in the Church, bishops held both spiritual and temporal power. The Paper’s author provides a detailed analysis, together with lists of fee-payers as one of the several working drafts produced by the Association’s Domesday Committee. This particular working group had for several years focussed on transcribing and accurately translating the Devonshire section of Domesday, as well as its relationship to the Testa de Nevil Tax roll for Devon. A great many of Devon’s ancient place names are tied to the names of the original landowners, so the paper becomes a treasury of very early Devon individual and family names associated with land possession in the county, thus providing a cornucopia of inestimable value to the genealogist and historian. The paper was presented at the Association’s August 1900 Totnes meeting. The author who researched and constructed this invaluable ecclesiastical calendar, Reverend Sabine Baring-Gould of Lew Trenchard, was an Anglican priest, hagiographer, antiquarian, novelist, folk song collector and eclectic scholar.  He is remembered particularly as a writer of hymns, the best-known being "Onward, Christian Soldiers". In compiling a calendar of the saints to whom churches and chapels are dedicated in Devon and Cornwall, with particular attention to those that belonged to the ancient British Church (most of whom in Devon were displaced by the bishops of Exeter after the Saxon Conquest), several serious difficulties were encountered. No Celtic Calendars for the West of England have been preserved, and the Exeter Calendars at the time of writing ignored Devon and Cornwall’s Celtic saints. The paper has an extensive Appendix of Saint’s Days, as well as the days of town and villages’ feast and fairs. The Devonshire Association’s Presidential Address was read at its July 1910 Cullompton meeting. John Davies Enys (11 October 1837 – 7 November 1912) was a Cornishman who had spent some time in New Zealand as a “run holder” or sheep farmer. He was educated at Harrow School and became a distinguished naturalist. John D. Enys was born in Penryn to John Samuel Enys (1796 – 1872) and Catherine (née Gilbert) - see Wikipedia. In the 1850s, Mr Enys attended lectures at the Geological Society of London, took walking tours in Britain and carefully recorded discoveries of ferns, wild-flowers and shells, establishing a pattern of life as an inveterate collector and keen amateur naturalist. He settled in South Island, New Zealand, at Castle Hill, where he raised sheep and studied the local fauna, flora and geology. His brother, Charles joined him. He was scion of a family that had lived at Enys, on the northern outskirts of Penryn, since the reign of Edward I. The 1709 edition of Camden's Magna Britannia mentioned that Enys was noted for its fine gardens. John D.Enys greatly enriched these with the seeds and plants he regularly sent home from New Zealand and Patagonia. The formal gardens still contain plants shrubs and trees from the J D Enys Collection. 
His Presidential Address was on Churches of the West country, and their development from ancient chapels to the present form, common in Cornwall and parts of adjoining Devonshire. Alfington Church and its links to Sir John Coleridge

St James and St Anne's Church, Alfington

"St James' and St Anne's Church was erected in 1849 and maintained at the expense of Sir John Taylor Coleridge as a chapel-of-ease for the residents of Alfington, who had previously been required to travel to the parish church of Ottery St Mary. Coleridge commissioned William Butterfield to design the church, who at the time was working on the restoration of the parish church at Ottery St Mary.[2] Coleridge would also have a parsonage and school constructed for the village, both of which were designed by Butterfield.
A burial ground was added to the church in 1876 and consecrated on 29 September that year, followed by the addition of a vestry in 1882. Alfington became its own parish in 1882, which prompted Coleridge's son to hand the church over to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, who agreed to provide an endowment of £150 a year. A consecration service was performed on 29 September 1882 by the Bishop of Exeter, Frederick Temple, with the assistance of the Bishop of Ely, James Woodford."

Patteson, John Coleridge (1827–1871)

"On 25 September 1853, he was ordained as deacon and curate of Alfington, and on 24 September 1854 was ordained priest at Exeter Cathedral. On a visit in the summer of 1854, George Augustus Selwyn, the first Bishop of New Zealand, recruited Patteson as a missionary to the South Seas. Patteson left England with the bishop in March 1855. He died in 1871 - killed by natives."

Beatrix Feodore Cresswell (d.1940) was a prolific author of books and monographs on Devon, and an avid local historian, daughter of Rev Richard Cresswell, (1848-82) a Devon clergyman. No official biography of this remarkable lady has yet appeared. However, she bequeathed her own and her father's diaries to the Exeter City Library in 1940, from thence to the Devon Record Office. Many of her books and articles, particularly those on Exeter and Dartmoor remain popular, with reprints still available through major suppliers. The majority of needlework produced during the Middle Ages was devoted to ecclesiastical use. Sadly only a very small number of examples still exist in Devon, and these have provided an interesting field of enquiry for the author. The Internet Archive makes available, in its Community Texts Collection (originally known as Open Source Books), books that have been digitised by Google from a number of libraries. These are books on which copyright has expired, and are available free for educational and research use. This rare book was produced from a copy held by the Princeton University Library, and is available from the Internet Archive.

The paper was read at its July 1910 Cullompton meeting. The author was prompted to research and deliver his paper by the recent (at that time) millenary celebration of the See of Crediton’s foundation, and the widely held notion that with that ancient foundation, the written Ecclesiastical History of Devon commenced. However, there were bishops in Devon before A.D. 909. This early period had a history that in 1910 was still largely unstudied and unwritten. Many of the documents essential to the research were at best fragmentary and widespread. In the present paper, the author’s purpose was to collate the fragments and produce a foundational history of this important pre- historic period of Devon’s story. The article, from a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.

Churches under the authority of a bishop (e.g., Orthodox, Roman Catholic, or Anglican) are usually dedicated by the bishop in a ceremony that used to be called 'consecration', but is now called 'dedication'. It is often assumed that parish church dedications are ancient, but many of those in use today are inventions of the 18th and 19th centuries, and the original dedications were entirely different. In Devon, however, about 70% of church dedications have been traced to the period between the Norman Conquest and the end of the 16th century. This paper, presented at the Association's July 1903 Sidmouth meeting provides detailed information on the interesting dedication topic, as well as on the lives of several of the Saints. Church Houses in Devon

The paper was presented at the Association’s August 1900 Totnes meeting. Church houses were the Medieval equivalent of present day church halls. Their chief purpose was to house the fund-raising festivals and church ales for many parish churches until the rise of Puritanism. A parish was not required to have a church house. The church nave could function as a secular meeting-place for medieval parishioners, as well as a religious one.  As the open space in churches became filled with pews in the late Medieval period, it could no longer act as a parish hall. By the 15th century a number of parishes had bought or built a church house, or had one donated. A common location is by the churchyard - see Researching the History of Search Houses. The British and Irish Archaeological Bibliography lists 23 articles and two monographs by Rev Oswald J Reichel, BCL, MA, FSA, (1840-1923), the majority being papers on Devonshire historical records and matters of ecclesiastical interest delivered at annual meetings of the Devonshire Association. He is perhaps best remembered for his Complete Manuel of Canon Law. Reichel resided from 1886 until his death at La Ronde, now a celebrated National Trust property at Lympstone near Exmouth. The paper was presented in August at the Association’s July 1894 South Molton Conference. The thirteenth century was a period of religious revival throughout Devon. Bishop Brownlow in this paper asserts that current knowledge of life in our county in the 13th century relies mainly upon contemporary records, depending particularly upon Bishop Bronescombe’s Register, 1257 to 1280, and Bishop Quivil’s Register 1280 to 1291, after which a few fragments collected by Association member Prebendary Randolph from various ancient documents compensate to a limited extent for the loss of diocesan registers during Bishop Bytton’s episcopate. Of Bishop Bronescombe, the Prebendary remarked: “It is evident that a great wave of zeal for the Houses of God had swept over the whole Diocese (of Exeter), for we find that between September, 1259, and the end of 1298, the Bishop was called upon to dedicate 88 re-built or enlarged Churches. Further he revised the Cathedral Statutes in 1268, then through visitations made significant reforms. This well illustrated and comprehensive paper was presented at the Association’s July 1902 Bideford meeting. “Roodscreens dividing church chancels and naves, above which was the image of Christ on the cross usually accompanied by the Virgin and St John and often decorated with images of saints, were universal pieces of furnishing in English parish churches from at least the fourteenth century. The earliest surviving Devon screens date from about the 1380s” (Williams, M.A., Medieval Devon Roodscreens from the Fourteenth Century to the Present Day, The Devon Historian,2014, 83, 1-14). Much excellent supplementary information on Devon’s Rood Screens and Lofts may be accessed here. The Reformation followed by a 19th century ecclesiastical movement favouring open-plan churches led to the destruction of many of these beautiful Medieval furnishings. An appendix to the paper (pp.549-50) provides a list of those Devon Rood Screens that have over time been removed. These were scattered at the Revolution when the abbey was suppressed. They were long supposed to be lost, and had been only recently recovered, and restored to the National Library of France. Two religious houses under the Cluniac Rules existed in Devonshire, both designated Alien Priories. They were St. James at Exeter and St Mary Magdalene at Barnstaple, both constituted as cells of St. Martin des Champs in Paris. The author notes that Barnstaple Priory was the earliest Cluniac establishment in England. For the genealogist, Mr. Chanter’s Paper is an invaluable record of the names of those associated with our county’s early history. This lavishly illustrated Paper, providing the solid foundation for a nine-part series, was presented at the Association’s July 1913 Buckfastleigh meeting. Among the antiquities of which Devon can boast, its parish church fonts hold an important place, forming in their development through the centuries a full series, from the earliest and simplest types, through the innumerable variations of a thousand years to modern elaborate structures. The Paper’s author, a gifted local historian and Association member who resided at Mont-le-Grand, (off Polsloe Road) in Exeter, was a frequent contributor to the Transactions. Both of her 1907-8 Papers on the Misericordia of Exeter Cathedral established her credentials as a reputable scholar. These were followed in 1912 by a seminal Paper on the records of Exeter’s St. Nicholas Priory. Her present, highly illustrated Paper laid the foundation for a nine-part series on Devon’s baptismal fonts that appeared periodically until 1922. The Presbyterian Church in Devon

Protestant non-conformist views have always tended to be strong in Devon, although until the mid C17 puritans in the county generally stayed within the established Church of England. During the Commonwealth, Presbyterianism became the official form of worship in the parish churches with Anglican clergy either conforming or being replaced by puritan ministers. However, with the Restoration of Charles II, the Anglican church was also restored and non-conformist puritan ministers were ejected from the parish churches.

Despite official persecution, some ejected ministers almost immediately set up their own congregations - there was strong local support in Exeter and Plymouth in particular. The first Presbyterian congregations in Devon therefore effectively date from 1662. Plymouth was also an important staging-point for non-conformists emigrating to the American colonies, who joined local congregations whilst waiting for a ship.

Nationally, the Presbyterians were the strongest non-conformist group in England in the early C18, with 637 congregations and some 180,000 members (3.3% of the population).

It has to be said that identifying a particular congregation as "Presbyterian" is not always certain. In Scotland, the Presbyterian church established a federal structure: each congregation appointed its own minister, who would meet with the other local ministers in district synods, which in turn would send delegates to the central governing body of the church. This system was not maintained in England after 1660, and individual congregations could use the term Presbyterian without necessarily being part of a national church with consistent theology and regulations. Presbyterians also had fairly close links with the Independents (Congregationalists), with whom they shared a common Calvinist theology, and the two churches came close to union in the 1690's; even after this failed, there was often a degree of local co-operation, and some Presbyterian congregations later became Independent.

During the C18, Presbyterianism was certainly in decline, perhaps losing members to other - more Evangelical - denominations such as the Baptists and later the Methodists. To add to the confusion, a substantial number of Presbyterian ministers and congregations went over to a Unitarian theology, though many still called themselves "Presbyterian" into the 19th C.

These factors led to the virtual demise of the English Presbyterian church. However, at the same time the Scottish Presbyterian church had been establishing a presence in England, particularly where there were immigrant Scots; most of the surviving (non-Unitarian) English Presbyterian congregations joined with these Scottish congregations in 1836, with other chapels joining in 1876 to form the "Presbyterian Church of England". This merged with the Congregational church in 1972 to form the United Reformed Church.

The religious census of 1851 identified 202 Unitarian congregations in England, nearly all the descendents of Presbyterian meetings, and 142 Presbyterian congregations, most of them founded by immigrant Scots; together these claimed 84,000 members, 0.5% of the population (at a time when roughly one-third of the population attended a non-conformist church, one-third the Church of England, and one-third no church at all).

In Devon, over 80 Presbyterian congregations were established in the 1660's and 70's, though more than half of these ceased within a few years, and others died out during the C18. Some became Independents, and several of the survivors became Unitarian. Only a handful continued as Presbyterian to 1837. Some examples, including the surviving Presbyterian congregations:

Bideford: Presbyterian meeting broke away 1693, rejoined Independent meeting 1760

Bovey Tracey: founded as Presbyterian before 1715, closed 1760's, reopened as Baptist by 1773

Bow: Presbyterian meeting founded c.1700, but declined and members joined Crediton late C18.

Buckerell: Presbyterian meeting existed before 1672, ceased by 1772

Chudleigh: founded as Presbyterian 1662, lapsed 'for want of a minister' but revived 1710; became Independent late C18.

Colyton: founded as Presbyterian 1662, new Meeting House 1745, split over Unitarian issue in 1770's.

Crediton: founded as Presbyterian 1668, absorbed congregation from Bow; later became Unitarian.

Cullompton: founded before 1672, meeting house built 1695, continuous thereafter (baptism records from 1698)

Dartmouth: founded 1662, continuous thereafter (baptism records from 1726)

Sir Jerom Murch (1807-1896) was a descendant of a Huguenot family that settled in England in the 17th century and of one of the nonconformist ministers ejected from the Church of England. He was educated at University College London and spent his early career as a Unitarian minister in Norfolk before settling in Bath where he was appointed minister of Trim Street Chapel in a poor part of the city. Murch became one of the key figures in Bath's political and cultural life during the 19th century, serving as Mayor seven times. He was keen on initiatives to help the poor, in particular improving Bath's water supply and sanitation. He was also involved in the extensions to Bath's Guildhall in the 1890s, including the Victoria Art Gallery. This rare and much sought-after book was produced digitally from a copy in the Harvard University Library collection and can be downloaded from Google Books.
