Fifth Report of the Committee on Church Plate - Deanery of Totnes
Report and Transactions of the Devonshire Association for the Advancement of Science, Literature and the Arts. Vol. 45, 3rd Series
Plymouth: W Brendan & Son (1913). Paper read at Buckfastleigh, July 23rd , illus. pp. 93-117.
Prepared by Michael Steer
The Rural Deanery of Totnes in 1913 consisted of 22 parishes and three district churches. Of these, 21 are ancient parishes or chapelries. Reverend John Frederick Chanter (1854-1939) was son of John Roberts Chanter, a Barnstaple solicitor and author. He was educated at Crediton Grammar School and served as Rector of Parracombe from 1886 to 1916. In 1889 he married Rose Edith, youngest daughter of Reverend W.H. Thompson, Vicar of Exmoor. He was the author of numerous books and articles on local history, and was a regular contributor to the Devonshire Association Transactions. He was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries and appointed Honorary Archivist of Exeter Cathedral, a position he held until his death. He was responsible for cataloguing a large section of the Exeter Diocesan archives, and the 'Chanter numbers' he assigned to the large series of volumes in the archives are still in use today. He was elected Treasurer and installed as a Prebendary of Exeter Cathedral in the 1920s The Internet Archive makes available, in its Community Texts Collection (originally known as Open Source Books), books that have been digitised by Google from a number of libraries. These are books on which copyright has expired, and are available free for educational and research use. This rare book was produced from a copy held by the Princeton University Library, and is available from the Internet Archive.
