A copy of the poll for the knights of the shire for the county of Norfolk, taken at Norwich, March 23, 1768 taken before William Woodley Esq., High Sheriff

The Poll Book contains the following information :-

The directory now contains the names of the Freeholders and where the Freeholds lie and in another column the place of Residence of the person entitled to vote.

This is followed by 4 columns headed by the names of the candidates.
Each person has up to 2 votes and a horizontal bar indicates which people they voted for (only some of which have been transcribed).

The book contains the following:-

Note that many of the Hundreds etc. finish part way down a page particularly where people voted at the wrong booths. The original page numbers for the majority are maintained but if there are 2 or more Hundreds etc. on a page then they are given suffixes "-A" for first, "-B" for second etc.

Those who voted at the wrong booth (all listed below with original page numbers) have been moved to their correct Hundred and Parish and renumbered accordingly with a cross reference showing old and new (used in index) page numbers.

Notes

• 1. Some variation will be found in the names of the places in the book.
• 2. Docking Hundred parishes are included under Smithdon.
• 3. "Norwich City and County of the City" are not in the book as it was a County election.
• 4. People who voted at the wrong booths are also included in transcriptions of their correct Hundreds and have been placed in their correct Parishes (and indexed as such).
• 5. This entry only appears here as STERNINGHOE does not appear in any gazetteer? Note Crouse has this as "Stanhoe, Smithdon Hundred"
• 6. This is assumed to be Wiggenhall St. Mary Magdalen as "MAUDLIN" is assumed to be the place name.
• 7. As no place was given for this entry it has not been added to the Freebridge Marshland page.
• 8. Eastgate, Southgate and Woodrow are Hamlets of Cawston.
• 9. Sir Edward Astley, Bart. and Thomas De Grey Esq. were elected.

Errors and Omissions

Whilst comparing this publication to the same (but including occupiers) by J. Crouse a number of discrepancies have been found and are noted in the other transcription. Therefore it is worth checking both.
