The Paper was presented at the Association’s 25th July 1907 Axminster meeting. The authors explain the meaning and importance to museum curators, academics and the general public of the term “type-specimen”. The Torquay Natural History Society Museum contains an excellent collection of Devonian fossils. Mr Else its curator, with the assistance of Mr. Jukes-Browne has with this paper, provided an important early database. For genealogists this record is a valuable source of names associated with the earliest research into our county’s unique paleontology. he Paper, from a copy of a rare journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.

Devon - Archives and Libraries:

The Record Offices and Local Studies Libraries that come under Devon County Council have been reorganized and amalgamated as Devon Archives and Local Studies (based at the Devon Heritage Centre, Exeter with a branch at North Devon Record Office, Barnstaple). These now form part of the South West Heritage Trust, "an  independent charity committed to protecting and celebrating Somerset and Devon’s rich heritage", which also encompasses the Museum of Somerset and the Rural Life Museum, in Glastonbury. These developments do not affect the other major Devon archive, the Plymouth Archives (previously the Plymouth and West Devon Record Office and now part of The Box) or the Local and Family History Facilities (which are located in Plymouth Central Library and come under the Plymouth City Council). Collectively these provide the principal genealogy-related resources in Devon. However the respective reponsibilities and resources of Devon Archives and Local Studies, and of the Plymouth-based services are not easily disentangled - hopefully the links given below will help.

Exeter and Barnstaple:

• Devon Archives and Local Studies website - "based at Devon Heritage Centre, Exeter with a branch at North Devon Record Office, Barnstaple. Devon Heritage Centre includes the holdings of the Westcountry Studies Library (WSL) and the library of the Devon and Cornwall Record Society (DCRS)."

Plymouth:

• The Plymouth Archives (previously the Plymouth and West Devon Record Office) are now to be found in the Cottonian Research Room at The Box. (This also provides mens of accessing the   South West Film and Television Archive, the South West Image Bank, the Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery and elements of The Plymouth Local Studies Library.)
• Local and Family History - at Plymouth Central Library. (The coverage is principally of Plymouth, rather than the larger area covered by the Plymouth Archives.)
• The Plymouth and West Devon Record Office Facebook page is no longer being maintained. Postings are instead being made  on the The Box Plymouth Facebook page.

Online Exeter, Barnstaple and Plymouth Catalogues:

• Devon Archive Collection Catalogue Search page - "The catalogue lists records held at the Devon Heritage Centre (Archives section) and the North Devon Record Office."
• Southwest Heritage Trust: Devon and Somerset Local Studies Catalogue - This encompasses the collections of the the former Westcountry Studies Library and the Somerset Library, as well privately owned collections of the Devon and Cornwall Record Society, the North Devon Athenaeum, and the Somerset Archaeological and Natural History Society.
• Plymouth Archive's catalogue and research guides. 
• Note that the Record Office collections at Exeter, Barnstaple and Plymouth have in significant part been catalogued by the The National Archive (TNA)'s Access to Archives Project. The results of this now-terminated cataloguing project are incorporated in TNA's Discovery catalogue, and can be browsed or searched via their Devon and Local Studies Service and the Plymouth Archives pages.
• Devon and Cornwall Record Society: a shelf-list of the collections (archived copy). Covers the Society's own publications, parish register transcriptions, files on a large number of individual parishes and families, etc., etc. (This collection is housed within the Devon Heritage Centre, but is now covered by the Southwest Heritage Trust: Devon Archive Catalogue.)

• Formed by a merger of the Public Record Office and the Royal Commission on Historical Manuscripts, The National Archives (TNA) is the principal repository for English and Welsh records. You might like to start by browsing the titles of their 193 guides classified under 'family history'. TNA offer many, many useful Research Guides.

• The National Archives (TNA)'s Discovery system is now the key to finding their holdings - see also: TNA Discovery Help.

• TNA's Access to Archives (A2A) programme has been absorbed into Discovery (above).

• The National Register of Archives has now been absorbed into Discovery (above). It is/was an extensive searchable database (formerly run by the Royal Commision on Historical Manuscripts, now part of TNA) which contains information on the nature and location of manuscripts and historical records that relate to British history.

• Your Archives — NB this is now closed but remains available as a read-only resource — "The National Archives' online community of records users", a wiki that archive users can contribute to: "These pages are for you to contribute your knowledge of archival sources held by The National Archives and by other archives throughout the UK."

• The National Archives (TNA, Kew) have a worldwide list of archives. This links into the UK section.

• The L.D.S. (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints) have now provided online search facilities for the I.G.I. (International Genealogical Index). As well as the general search facility, there is also a Custom Search page allowing more refined searches. • The FamilySearch site has a list of Family History Centres in England. These are provided by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

• The National Archives (TNA) in Kew brings together the Public Records Office (PRO) and the Historical Manuscripts Commission, and is the principal repository for English and Welsh records. ( Note: most Scottish records are held in the National Archives of Scotland in Edinburgh, and Northern Ireland Records are held by The Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI) .)
• Now that the Access to Archives (A2A) project is no more, TNA's  Discovery catalogue covers holdings in many regional archives as well as the National Archives themselves - see their  Find an Archive page. • The National Archives' "gateway to archival resources, projects and initiatives in the UK and abroad" has been transferred to the UNESCO Archives Portal (archived copy).
• JISC's  Library Hub Discover provides a means of  searching resources in UK and Irish academic, national & specialist libraries - as of Jan 2020, it held  "42,377,775 records created from 106,728,673 records contributed by 144 institutions".
• The Archives Hubis a service run by MIMAS at Manchester Computing which provides free access to descriptions of archives held in the UK's universities and colleges. The descriptions can be searched in a number of ways and will form one part of the emerging UK National Archives Network.
