Hagnaby

  • RAF East Kirkby is a former airfield opened in August 1943 as a bomber command station. The airfield is located just south-east of Hagnaby village.
  • Wikipedia tells us "In the 1950s, the base was used by the United States Air Force for Air Rescue squadrons".
  • The airfield closed in 1958 and was sold by the government in 1964. The Control Tower is now part of the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre.
  • David Hitchborne has a photograph of the Former East Kirkby Aerodrome on Geo-graph, taken in May, 2007.

Lincolnshire

The Great War Bulletin for January 18th, 1915 tells us that schools in the Newark area had to give students two days off because 1,000 Territorial troops from Lincolnshire were maneuvering in and around Newark in Nottinghamshire.

Pat COOK provides letters written by Joe SMITH starting from just before the Great War until his death in 1916.
