“HAGNABY, a parish in the W. division of Bolingbroke soke, parts of Lindsey, county Lincoln, 5 miles W. of Spilsby, its post town, and 1 mile S.W. of Bolingbroke. It is situated on the Catchwater drain, which is navigable, and communicates with the river Witham. The surface is generally level, and the soil sandy. The village consists of a few farmhouses. The tithes have been commuted for land and a money payment. The living is a perpetual curacy in the diocese of Lincoln, value £82. The church, dedicated to St. Andrew, is a neat structure erected at the beginning of the present century. There are some small charities. Hagnaby Priory, the seat of Thomas Coltman, Esq., lord of the manor, is built on the site of a Premonstratensian abbey founded in 1175 by Herbert de Orreby."

Description & Travel

This parish and small village are located about 5 miles southwest of Spilsby. The parish only covers about 840 acres.

The village is nestled near a small stream called the Hagnaby Beck. If you are planning a visit:

  • By automobile, take the A155 east out of Keal for about a mile and a half. Or, head south out of Spilsby on the A16 and turn right (west) onto the A155

Military History

  • RAF East Kirkby is a former airfield opened in August 1943 as a bomber command station. The airfield is located just south-east of Hagnaby village.
  • Wikipedia tells us "In the 1950s, the base was used by the United States Air Force for Air Rescue squadrons".
  • The airfield closed in 1958 and was sold by the government in 1964. The Control Tower is now part of the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre.

  • This place was an ancient parish in Lincoln county and it became a modern Civil Parish when those were established.
