Civil births, deaths and marriages were registered for the Irish population since 1864. Non-Catholic marriages began in 1845. Information prior to this may be available only in Parish records maintained by Irish churches, many of which may only go back to the early 19th century. Knowing the origin of your ancestor in Ireland is the key to researching the available records, and knowing the Parish or Townland opens the door to locating various records. The Civil Parish list below is meant as a guide to cross reference Towns, Roman Catholic (R. C.) parishes, Townlands, etc., and help to locate records which may be available at the Family History Library, at County Heritage Centers, in the National Library of Ireland, in local custody of the church, and elsewhere.
