"SURLINGHAM, 5 miles E. by S. of Norwich, is a pleasant village on the southern acclivities of the vale of the Yare, comprising in its parish 446 inhabitants, and 1,767A. of land, exclusive of 100A. of broads, (water) and lying chiefly in the manors of Surlingham and Earlham, (fines arbitrary). C.E. Tuck, Esq., is lord of the former, and Robt. Fellowes, Esq., of the latter; but a great part of the soil belongs to other proprietors, several of whom are resident, in neat houses. Here were formerly two CHURCHES, St. Mary and St. Saviour; but the latter is in ruins, - being dilapidated several centuries ago. The former is a small edifice, . . . Both were appropriated to the nuns of Carrow Abbey. The vicarage of St. Mary, and the curacy of St. Saviour, are consolidated, and valued in the King's Book at £6 13s. 4d., and in 1831 at £100; in the presentation of the Bishop of Norwich, and incumbency of the Rev. John Scott. The Rev. Wm. Collett is appropriator of the great tithes and 36A. of glebe. The great and small tithes were commuted in 1845 for £410 per annum. There may be more people living in detached parts of the parish (if there were any) and, if so, the number may or may not be included in the figures above. It is quite difficult to be sure from the population tables.
