Rauceby

  • The War Memorial cross was erected in 1918 in memory of the men of the parish who fell in World War I.
  • Richard CROFT has a photograph of the War Memorial on Geo-graph, taken in October, 2006.
  • The War Memorial is a Grade II listed structure by British Heritage.
  • St. Peter's Lychgate, built in 1912, is a memorial to Maj.-Gen. Mildmay W. WILLSON, K.C.B., who died in 1912. He was born in Rauceby in July, 1847 and who served in South Africa during the Boer War.
  • The RAF acquired Rauceby Hospital (above) in 1940 to supplement RAF Hospital Nocton Hall. The existing inmates were dispersed to other institutions. It was formally known as "No. 4 RAF Hospital Rauceby."

Lincolnshire

The Great War Bulletin for January 18th, 1915 tells us that schools in the Newark area had to give students two days off because 1,000 Territorial troops from Lincolnshire were maneuvering in and around Newark in Nottinghamshire.

Pat COOK provides letters written by Joe SMITH starting from just before the Great War until his death in 1916. These are letters to his devoted mother, telling of his enlistment and life in the Royal Navy, his training, uniform, girl friends, sleeping in a hammock, and stories of life on the ship.
