Details of extant records on Archives Network Wales for the following;

  • Mount Carmel English Baptist Church, Caerphilly     " ........... was formed in 1874, and was formally established at Tynyberllan (now demolished), in Castle Street, Caerphilly, Glamorgan. The church moved to a room at the old market place on the Twyn and built their iron church on the corner of Windsor Street in 1876. The first minister, the Rev. Thomas Thomas, of Ararat Baptist Church, Wauntreoda, Whitchurch, was appointed in 1875. The initial history of the church was dogged by internal disputes until the appointments of experienced and talented ministers Rev. William Morgan (1881-1890), J. G. Hopkins (1891-1895), and his brother, A. O. Hopkins (1897-1901). The new church in Pontygwindy Road was opened in 1892. Alterations and extensions to the church had to be made in 1905-1907 and 1913 to accommodate a growing congregation"

  • "The church began with a meeting of volunteers requested by the Rev. W. I. Morris of Sardis Welsh Congregational church in 1880 in order to answer the requirements of English speakers. This led to the construction of an English church on Gelliwastad Field in 1881, but the Coedpenmaen area was still in need of provision, and the District Congregational Council 1895 encouraged the English church to acquire land on lease from the Bassett estate in Bonvilston Rd in 1896 where a building, later described as the Mission Hall, was functioning mainly as a Sunday School. Services were added in 1898 and a Resident Missioners provided by the Congregational church in 1900. The Bonvilston Rd church formed itself as a separate church in 1920 with the initial support of the Gelliwastad church and appointed its own minister, the Rev. A. C. Gravelle, in 1922 but the church struggled to survive during the Depression 1926-1934. The problem was partly resolved by sharing pastorate with New Road Congregational church, Ynysbwl, from 1942, and benefited from the activity of the Rev. D. Brinley Richards, 1945-1947, but the church lacked a minister from his departure until 1969, and had to depend upon lay preachers and 'service' ministers. Falling congregation numbers led to a decision by the church meeting in March 1969 to close the church. Members transferred to the newly-formed Pontypridd United Church."

  • Groes-wen Congregational Church records    "Groes-wen Independent Chapel ......... original building on the site was erected in 1742 during the Methodist Revival. Named the New House, it was the first chapel to be specifically built by the Welsh Calvinistic Methodists. In 1752, the congregation severed its connection with Wesleyan Methodism and the Church of England, by embracing the Independent denomination with the Rev. William Edwards, the renowned bridge-builder, as joint minister. The building was extended in 1766 and 1831, and the vestry was built in 1866 as a venue for the first British School in the district"

    "Ebenezer Independent chapel was established in 1846 by members of Groeswen Independent chapel who had previously met at Ynys Farm, Rhydyfelin. The chapel was completely re-built in 1896 but closed in 1969. The building was demolished soon afterwards to make way for the reconstruction of the Cardiff to Merthyr Tydfil trunk road. Burials were transferred to Glyntaff Cemetery, Pontypridd; gravestones were destroyed."
