"BEESTON, or Beeston-next-Mileham, is a large scattered village and parish, 7 miles W. of East Dereham, united with Bittering Parva, for the support of the poor, the two parishes containing 696 souls, 187 houses, and 2,456a. of land, of which only 16 souls and 392a. are in Bittering Parva. The Rev. C. B. Barnwell is patron of the Church and lord of the manor of Beeston, in which the copyholds are subject to a fine of 2s. or a ploughshare, on every death or alienation. Church, dedicated to St. Mary, is a rectory, valued in the King's book at £13, enjoyed by the Rev. Jno. Nelson, M.A., who has a yearly rent of £550, in lieu of tithes. The Free School, founded by the Rev. C. B. Barnwell, in 1806, for twelve poor children, is endowed with £6 a year for the master, and £1 a year to provide bibles."
