Census: 1811

North Walsham is one of the few places in the county for which a census before 1841 containing names survives.

This 1811 Norfolk Record Office document [with the reference PD711 - ACC2004/252 Box 47] is written in an A4 sized book on 15 pages.

The Population in 1801 Consisted of 1959

 

Allowance for taking the Population by the Sessional Parliament
Where the number of Persons did not exceed the number of sixty 3/-
If more than 60 & did not exceed one hundred & twenty the sum of 5/-
and in all cases where such return did exceed one hundred & twenty at
and after the rate of one halfpenny for each & every of the total
Number of persons Contained & Specified in each of such returns.
And such Allowances are to be made to the said Overseers
out of the Poor's Rate of their respective Parishes.

  • 1. First 17 lines of document have the Names missing. "*" means page was torn and names are not available. The 1821 census does list the residents of "Eastgate"
  • 2. The word "Widower" was crossed out.
  • 3. In other documents the following alternative spellings have been seen which appear to refer to the same people:-
    De Benne/Debenne, Margetson/Margitson
  • 4. Dr Thomas Hay was the incumbent of North Walsham from 11/Oct/1785 to April 1813 and then Northrepps from 27/Apr/1813 to 27/Mar/1830
