TACOLNESTONE, commonly called Tacleston, 5 miles N.E. of New Buckenham, and 10 miles S.W. by W. of Norwich, is a parish in Depwade union, hundred, and petty sessional division, Wymondham county court district, Norwich bankruptcy court district, Stratton polling district of South Norfolk, Depwade rural deanery, and Norfolk archdeaconry. It had 438 inhabitants in 1881, and the rateable value is £2606 15s.
It comprises 1396 acres of land, belonging principally to Sir Francis George Manningham Boileau, Bart., of Ketteringham Hall (see p.353 [which is the entry for Ketteringham]), who is lord of the manor of Dovedale, and occasionally resides at Tacolnestone Hall, which is a large picturesque ancient mansion, with extensive shrubbery and pleasure-grounds, situated in a park of 100 acres, encircled by old and new plantations. The garden is partially surrounded by a moat, and the walls of the dining and drawing rooms are finely panelled in oak. The house is throughout fitted and furnished with fine oak-work and antique furniture. In the dining-room is a handsome chimney-piece with well-carved figures of Justice, Charity, and Hope. Sir F.G.M. Boileau is also lord of the manor of Williams.
The CHURCH (All Saints) comprises nave, chancel, south aisle, and square tower with five bells, and was rebuilt about A.D. 1509. Part of the old screen remains, and forms the front of the rectory pew; and in the chancel is a piscina with a shelf. Here are also several tablets of the Warren and Knipe families.
The rectory, valued in the King's Book at £12, has 30 acres of glebe, and a yearly rent-charge of £566, awarded in 1845 in lieu of tithes. The Rev. J. Corbould Warren, M.A., is the incumbent, and has a neat residence; and is the patron.
The Fuel Allotment, 10 acres, awarded at the enclosure in 1779, is let for £20. The oldest poor widows of the parish have £5 4s. yearly, left by Edmund Knipe, in 1781, out of a farm at Shipmeadow.
The school was built at the sole expense of Sir F.G.M. Boileau, Bart., and is attended by 80 children.
