[Description(s) from The National Gazetteer (1868)]
"ALVESTON, a parish in the upper and lower divisions of the hundred of Langley and Swinehead, in the county of Gloucester, 3 miles to the S. of Thornbury. It is situated within a short distance of the Cotswold hills. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Gloucester and Bristol, value £250, in the patronage of the dean and chapter. The church, which stands apart from the village, has a low tower, and contains some monumental brasses. Alveston House is the principal residence.""GROVESEND, a hamlet in the parish of Alveston, hundred of Swineshead, county Gloucester, 2 miles S.E. of Thornbury. Here are traces of an ancient fortified camp, and tumuli in which human remains were discovered in the last century. Lackington, bookseller, once lived here."

From the Alveston Burial Register: 1813-1870:-
"According to the testimony of John Cullimore (aged 81) the No of inhabitants of the Parish of Alveston in 1770 was 205, and only 5 communicants: the No of houses in 1786 was 47:- the No of houses in Alveston down, from the Ship Inn to the hollow beyond the lime kilns, going to Olveston, was 3 containing 7 inhabitants: the No of houses at Rudgeway in Alveston psh was 3."
