This scholarly paper, delivered at the Association's 1897 Kingsbridge meeting, relates taxation records in the Black Book of the Exchequer (1166), the Testa de Nevil (1235), Kirby's Quest (abt 1283), and the Nomina Villarum (1315-6), to Devon's major land-holding families in the early feudal period.
