Name and Place Index to

The Baptismal Fonts of Devon, Part VII

By

Miss Kate M. Clarke

Trans. Devon. Assoc., vol. LII, (1920), illus., pp. 327-335.

Prepared by Michael Steer

This lavishly illustrated Paper was presented at the Association’s 22nd July 1920 Totnes meeting. Among the many antiquities of which Devon can boast, its parish church fonts hold an important place, forming in their development through the centuries a full series, from the earliest and simplest types, through the innumerable variations of a thousand years to modern elaborate structures. Miss Clarke’s Paper is a valuable resource for genealogists of those names and places associated with early research into our county’s unique ecclesiastical architecture. The Paper’s author, a gifted local historian and Association member, was a frequent contributor to the Association’s Transactions. Her two 1907-8 Papers on the Misericordia of Exeter Cathedral established her credentials as a reputable scholar. These were followed in 1912 by a seminal Paper on the records of Exeter’s St. Nicholas Priory. Her present copiously illustrated Paper is the seventh iteration in a nine-part series on Devon’s baptismal fonts that appeared periodically in the Transactions until 1922. The Paper, from a copy of a rare journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitization of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
