Fourth Report of the Committee on Church Plate - Deanery of Exeter and its Suburbs
Trans. Devon. Assoc., vol. 44, (1912), illus. pp. 86-125.
By
Rev. J.F. Chanter, M.A. (Ed.).
Prepared by Michael Steer
The Committee’s profusely illustrated Fourth Report was presented at the Association’s Jubilee Exeter meeting, 24th July, 1912. The Committee’s purpose was to provide a detailed inventory of the church silver in the Deanery. The Exeter Deanery and Suburbs was also formally styled “The Deanery of Christianity”, because of a tradition that a diocese and a deanery should not share the same name. At the time of the report it consisted of 25 parishes. To these were added the ancient churches of St. Kerrian and St. George, both destroyed, but whose plate at that time still existed; St. Martin, disused, St. Pancras, united with St. Paul, the various subsidiary churches, for example, St. Michael, and such chapels as St. Loye, St. Clare Livery Pole, and Wynards, bringing the number surveyed to 37, not including schools, colleges, and institutes. The Report can be found in a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal that can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
