- Great Sutton was a township in Eastham ancient parish, Wirral hundred (SJ 3775), which became a civil parish in 1866.
- The civil parish was abolished in 1950 to become part of Ellesmere Port.
- It included the hamlets of Backford Cross (part) and Sutton Green.
- The population was 153 in 1801, 203 in 1851, and 397 in 1901.
