St John the Baptist, Great Meols, Church of England

Founded as a chapel to Hoylake: Holy Trinity. In 1937 it became the district church for parts of Hoylake, Moreton and West Kirby (previously served by Hoylake: Holy Trinity, Moreton: Christ Church, West Kirby: St. Andrew and Frankby: St. John the Divine). The boundaries of "The Consolidated Chapelry of Saint John the Baptist, Great Meols" were described in the London Gazette on 26 October 1937:

"All those contiguous portions of the New Parish (sometime Particular District) of the Holy Trinity, Hoylake, of the New Parish (sometime District Chapelry) of Christ Church, Moreton, of the New Parish (sometime District Chapelry) of Saint Andrew, West Kirby, and of the New Parish (sometime District) of Frankby, all in the County of Chester and in the Diocese of Chester, which taken together are bounded upon the north-west by the sea, upon part of the east by the New Parish of Saint Nicholas, Wallasey, in the said County and Diocese, and upon the remaining sides, that is to say, upon the remaining part of the east, upon the south-east and upon the southwest, by an imaginary line commencing at the point at the south side of Leasowe Road where the boundaries of the said New Parish of the Holy Trinity, Hoylake, of the said New Parish of Saint Nicholas, Wallasey, and of the said New Parish of Christ Church, Moreton, all meet, and extending thence westward along the boundary which divides the said New Parish of the Holy Trinity, Hoylake, from the said New Parish of Christ Church, Moreton, for a distance of 55 chains or thereabouts to the point where it crosses the middle of the roadway leading from Leasowe Lighthouse to the house and premises known as Lingham, and extending thence southward along the middle of the said roadway for a distance of 9 chains or thereabouts to the centre of the bridge which carries it across Arrow Brook, and extending thence first south-westward and then southeastward along the middle of Arrow Brook for a distance of 69 chains or thereabouts to the point where it is crossed by the footpath leading to Carrlane Farm, and extending thence south-westward along the middle of th. said footpath for a distance of 12 chains or thereabouts to the point where it reaches the northern end of Millhouse Lane, and extending thence south-eastward along the middle of Millhouse Lane for a distance of 31 chains or thereabouts to its junction with Birkenhead Road and Saughall Road, and extending thence first south-eastward and then southward along the middle of Saughall Road for a distance of 40 chains or thereabouts to its junction with Saughall Massie Road, and extending thence south-eastward along the middle of Saughall Massie Road for a distance of 5 chains or thereabouts to the centre of the bridge which carries it across Greasby Brook upon the boundary which divides the said New Parish of Christ Church, Moreton, from the Parish of Overchurch, in the said County and Diocese, and extending thence south-westward along such boundary (thereby following the middle of Greasby Brook) for a distance of 17 chains or thereabouts to the point where it meets the boundary which divides the said New Parish of Christ Church, Moreton, from the said New Parish of Frankby, and extending thence first south-westward and then in various directions along the last mentioned boundary (thereby continuing to follow for some distance the middle of Greasby Brook) for a distance of 73 chains or thereabouts to the point where such boundary reaches the southern side of Summerfields Lane, and extending thence first north-westward to and then south-westward along the middle of Summerfields Lane for a distance of 6½ chains or thereabouts to its junction with the roadway and footpath leading past the western side of the house and premises known
as New House to Heron Road, and extending thence north-westward along the middle of the said roadway and footpath (thereby crossing the boundary which divides the said New Parish of Frankby from the said New Parish of Saint Andrew, West Kirby) for a distance of 42 chains or thereabouts to its junction with the footpath leading across Fornalls Green, and extending thence first westward and then northwestward along the middle of the last mentioned footpath (thereby crossing the boundary which divides the said New Parish of Saint Andrew, West Kirby, from the said New Parish of the Holy Trinity, Hoylake) for a distance of 39 chains or thereabouts to the point where it is crossed by the fence which divides the close numbered 154 upon the Ordnance Survey Map of the Civil Parish of Hoylake cum West Kirby published in the year 1926 on the scale of 25 inches to a mile and also upon the map or plan annexed to this Representation from the close numbered 148 upon the said maps, and extending thence first westward and then in various directions along the fences which divide the said close numbered 154 and the closes numbered 155, 166 and 167 upon the said maps from the said close numbered 148 and the closes numbered 123 and 168 upon the same maps for a distance of 23 chains or thereabouts to the point where the fence which divides the said close numbered 167 from the said close numbered 168 meets the fence forming the southern boundary of the Wirral Line of the London Midland and Scottish Railway, and extending thence north-westward in a straight line across the said line of railway for a distance of 2 chains or thereabouts to a point in the middle of the southern end of Bertram Drive North, and extending thence north-westward along the middle of Bertram Drive North for a distance of 9 chains or thereabouts to its junction with Bertram Drive, and extending thence northward along the middle of Bertram Drive for a distance of 8 chains or thereabouts to its junction with Birkenhead Road, and extending thence south-westward along the middle of Birkenhead Road for a distance of 7 chains or thereabouts to its junction with Redstone Close and extending thence northward along the middle of Redstone Close for a distance of 8 chains or thereabouts to its junction with Ashford Road, and extending thence first northwestward and then south-westward along the middle of Ashford Road for a distance of 12 chains or .thereabouts to its; juinction with Wynstay Road, and extending thence northwestward along the middle of Wynstay Road for a distance of 7 chains or thereabouts to its junction with the road called Meols Parade, and continuing thence north-westward in a straight line hi precisely the same direction to the sea."

The district was affected by the following boundary changes:

• 1957 November 29 — reduced when an area was transferred to Leasowe: St. Chad.
• 1959 January 23 — reduced when the following area was transferred to Moreton: Christ Church: "All that part of the parish of Saint John the Baptist, Great Meols, which is bounded on the east by the parish of Christ Church, Moreton, on the southeast by the parish of Upton (or Overchurch) and on the remaining sides by an imaginary line commencing at the point where the boundary which divides the parish of Upton (or Overchurch) from the parish of Saint John the Baptist, Great Meols, meets the Wallasey County Borough boundary and extending thence generally northwestwards along -the said County Borough boundary to a point in the middle of the Birkenhead North to West Kirby branch railway line of British Railways (London Midland Region) and continuing thence northeastwards along the middle of the said railway line to the boundary which divides the parish of Saint John the Baptist, Great Meols, from the parish of Christ Church, Moreton."
