"GODLEY, a township in the parish of MOTTRAM in LONGDEN-DALE, hundred of MACCLESFIELD, county palatine of CHESTER, 6 miles (N. E. by E.) from Stock- port, containing 514 inhabitants. Godley is a corruption of Godleigh, the name of its possessors in the reign of John. The manufacture of cotton here is principally carried on by hand-loom weaving, and there is some business in the making of hats." - Godley was a township in Mottram-in-Longdendale ancient parish, Macclesfield hundred (SJ 9595), which became a civil parish in 1866.
- In 1923 the civil parish was abolished to become part of Hyde.
- It included the hamlets of Flowery Field (part) and Godley Hill.
- The population was 270 in 1801, 1353 in 1851, and 1691 in 1901.
