Church History
Built in 1847 as the district church for the township of Godley and part of the township of Newton (previously served by Mottram In Longdendale: St. Michael and Newton in Mottram: St. Mary). The boundaries of "The District of Godley cum Newton Green" were described in the London Gazette on 7 May 1847:
"All that part of the parish of Mottram in Longdendale, in the county and diocese of Chester, comprised within the township of Godley, in the said parish, and such part of the township of Newton, in the same parish, as is situate on the south eastern side of that part of Hall Bottom Brook flowing wesward of the line of railway called 'the Sheffield, Ashton-under-Lyne, and Manchester Railway,' and on the south western side of the said line of railway, extending from the said brook, to its junction with the township of Godley.
The district was affected by the following boundary change:
- 1966 June 9 — reduced when part of the village of Hattersley was transferred to Hattersley: St. Barnabas.
