Arthur St New Jerusalem, Clayton-le-Moors

The principal founder of the New Jerusalem Church in Clayton Le Moors was Dr W.H.Pilkington the son of Thomas Pilkington. Dr Pilkington came to Clayton Le Moors as a surgeon in around 1845 The first meetings were held in a cottage in Albert Street. The congregation grew rapidly and the cottage soon became too small, land was leased from Mr James Lomax and on June 6th 1868 the foundation stone was laid. The building was formally opened on November 8th 1868 by the reverend J Bayley. The Sunday school had by that time grown to accommodate one hundred pupils and fourteen teachers. Up to 1872 the services were conducted by missionary preachers in 1875 the Reverend I Tansley was ordained as the resident preacher and remained there until 1878. After a brief period the Reverend T K Payton became the minister and remained until he retired in 1888. In 1891 Mr W T Large became the leader of the society and he was ordained on July 30th 1893 and left during 1893 to become the minister of the Preston society. From then until at least 1901 the services were carried out by visiting preachers.
