St. Matthew, Mount St. Little Bolton, was established in 1874, a daughter church of St. George. Services were held in Mount St. school until St. Matthew's Church was dedicated on 13 Sep 1876.
The Spire of St. Matthew's was a notable landmark, rising 87 feet above its tower. In 1947 the Spire was leaning at an alarming angle so the top 30 feet was removed. The stones were numbered and arranged in the Churchyard, with plans to rebuild. Unfortunately the foundations were found to be inadequate and in 1955 the rest of the Spire was removed, leaving just the Tower.
The church closed in 1982, when they moved to Brownlow Way, and was demolished about 1988 due to dry rot. That now seems to be closed as well.
