There may be more people living in detached parts of the parish (if there were any) and, if so, the number may or may not be included in the figures above. It is quite difficult to be sure from the population tables.

1831 Census

"The Return of the Parish of Horsham-St. Faith, includes the Population of Newton-St. Faith, which heretofore made a distinct Return."

1841 and 1851 Censuses

"The Return for Horsham St. Faiths includes 137 persons in 1841, and 123 in 1851, in the St. Faiths Union Workhouse. Horsham St. Faiths and Newton St. Faiths are consolidated. The decrease of population in these Parishes, since 1841, is ascribed to the removal of weavers and their families to Norwich, and to emigration."

1861 Census

"ST. FAITHS. The decrease of population in most of the parishes comprised in the District of St. Faiths is attributed to the migration of labourers and their families to the manufacturing districts."

1901 Census

Press, 1989, is the standard text on the historical demography of England, based on many years of work by the Cambridge Group for the History of Population and Social Structure. A book which draws very usefully on this research, in order to study family and community in England after the Middle Ages and before the changes brought about by the Industrial Revolution, is: P. Laslett. The World We Have Lost: Further explored, London, Routledge, 1983, 353 p.

• Statistics on the population of the British Isles (archived copy).
• Histpop, the online historical population reports website, in its census section provides access to all the published population reports for Britain and Ireland from 1801 - 1937. The site has a huge amount of statistical information both at a county level and at a parish or district level. There is no personal information on the site.
