"PENTRE is a township forming part of the Urban District of Rhondda, 8 miles north-west from Pontypridd and adjoins Ystrad station on the Rhondda branch of the Great Western railway, The church of St. Peter, at Pentre, a chapel of ease to Ystradyfodwg, was erected in 1888-90, at a cost of £20,000 by Griffith Llewellyn esq. of Baglan Hall, and his wife, and consecrated by the Bishop of Llandaff, July 28, 1890 : it is a handsome building of Welsh stone, in the Early English style, from designs by Mr. F. R. Kempson, architect, ... there are 800 sittings. There is also a school church used for the Sunday school and for children's services and Bible and other classes. The Rhondda Urban District Council meets at the Council Offices, in Llewelyn street, Pentre, erected in 1883-84 at a cost of £4000 for the former Local Board of Health: the Education offices are also in the same building. The Grand Theatre, in Ystrad road, was rebuilt in 1912, and has seats for 1000 persons." [Kelly's South Wales Directory 1923 (ArchiveCDBooks) - transcribed by Gareth Hicks]

- Records of Cory Brothers and Company Ltd. 1888-1943 "Richard Cory (1799-1882) of Devon, was the owner of a small vessel which traded between Cardiff, Bristol and Ireland in the early part of the 19th century. In 1838 he opened a ship's chandler store in Cardiff. By 1856 Richard Cory was joined by his sons, John (1828-1910) and Richard (1830-1914), and traded as Richard Cory and Sons. They described themselves as ship-brokers, ship-owners, coal merchants and exporters. Three years later, when Richard Cory retired, John and Richard renamed the business Cory Brothers and Co. It became a limited liability company in 1888, at which point the minute books start.John and Richard Cory became coal owners in their own right with the purchase of Pentre colliery in the Rhondda in 1868. Gelli, Tynybedw and Tydraw collieries were later acquired, also several collieries in adjoining valleys......................................"
