In 1868, the parish of Merthyr Dyfan contained the following places:
"MERTHYR-DYFAN, a parish in the hundred of Dinas Powis, county Glamorgan, 6 miles N.W. of Cardiff, its post town. It is situated near the Bristol Channel. The parish, which abounds in hills, is small. The village consists of a few farmhouses and cottages. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Llandaff, value £109. The church is dedicated to St. Dovanus. The parochial charities produce about £4 per annum.
