"TONNA is an ecclesiastical parish formed in 1908, 2 miles north-east from Neath, from the civil parish of Llantwit, and is lighted with gas from works at Neath. The church of St. Anne, erected in 1891-2, at a cost of £5000, defrayed by the late Rev. David Griffiths, and opened in 1893, is a building of stone, in the Gothic style, ... five of the windows are stained; there are 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1908. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £400, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Llandaff and the Board of Patronage, ... There is a Calvinistic Methodist chapel, and a colliery in the district. On a hill overlooking the valley is an ivy covered round tower, from which a charming view of the Vale of Neath is obtained. The population in 1911 was 1, 277." [From Kelly's South Wales Directory 1923 (ArchiveCDBooks) - transcribed by Gareth Hicks]
