Names, Geographical

  • A useful guide on this subject is James B. Johnston's The place-names of Berwickshire, published in Edinburgh in 1940. This can be of great help in identifying which parish a particular place lies within, or discovering more about the origins of a given place name.
  • The Place Names of Dumfriesshire by Sir Edward Johnson-Ferguson, published in 1935.
  • Gaelic place names of the Lothians by John Milne is available on microfilm from LDS family history centres around the world. It is 30 pages long and was published by McDougall's Educational Company in Edinburgh.
  • The Ordnance Survey Object Name Books provide a description of every town, village, building, archaeological site and natural feature. They were created during the compilation of the O.S. First Edition maps of Wigtownshire and include notes and observations on all features on the original six-inch maps published in the 1840s. Each parish is split between several different books. The original first edition name books are held by the National Records of Scotland, Edinburgh. Details for each parish are on the parish pages. They are available at ScotlandsPlaces.

  •     "The Book of Scottish Names" Iain Zaczek : (January 2001) The rich traditions of Scotland have given us some beautiful and evocative names. This gift book lists the most popular names for both boys and girls, giving their derivations, pronunciations, meanings and the legends associated with them.
  •     "The Surnames of Scotland" George F. Black : (1996) A book on the origin, meaning and history of Scottish surnames. The core of this work is a listing of over 8000 names, each with a concise history and cross-references.

Social Life & Customs

  • A good insight into 17th century Berwickshire life, for the gentry at least, may be found in the diaries of George Home of Kimmerghame (1660-1705). The first instalment of these (An album of Scottish families, 1694-96) was published in 1990 by Aberdeen University Press and edited by Helen and Keith Kelsall.
  • Cromartie : Highland life 1650-1914 Eric Richards and Monica Clough. Aberdeen : Aberdeen University Press, 1989 ISBN 0-08-037732-7 This is a superb history of the Cromartie Estate which gives an idea of the social life and social conditions in that part of the world over the two and a half centuries from 1650.
