Church History

Abbey St. Bathans Kirk in Berwickshire

The Romanesque-styled church at Abbey St. Bathans is the descendant of a Cistercian convent founded in 1184 by Ada, Countess of Dunbar, daughter of William I (the Lion) The convent, near the site of the 6th. century chapel found by St. Bathan, was abandoned at the Reformation of the Scottish Church in 1560. The present kirk is made up of a part of the old priory church with additions made in 1570, 1675,1679 and a total renovation in 1719. The church is now part of a group known as the Kirk of Lammermuir.
