It was founded in 1853.

Architect: Sir George Gilbert Scott. Foundation stone laid, 1853. Consecrated, 1865. Sir George also designed the monument to Alexander Penrose Forbes (1817-1875), the bishop under whom the diocese was revitalised.

The cathedral has a fine ring of eight bells from Whitechapel foundry.
