SKREEN, or SKRYNE, a parish, partly in the barony of SHELMALIER, but chiefly in that of BALLAGHKEJEN, county of WEXFORD, and province of LEINSTER, 5 miles (N. E.) from Wexford, on the coast road from Wexford to Oulart; containing 382 inhabitants. It comprises 977 statute acres, as applotted under the tithe act; within its limits is Ballinroan Lodge, the property of R. S. Guinness, Esq. The inhabitants are partly employed in the herring fishery at Carracloe, in the adjoining parish of St. Margaret.
It is an impropriate cure, in the diocese of Ferns, forming part of the union of Ardcolme; the rectory is impropriate in the Earl of Portsmouth. The tithes amount to £74. 4. 10. of which £40. 9. 3½. is payable to the impropriator, and £33. 14. 6½. to the curate; there is a glebe of 19 acres. In the R. C. divisions it forms part of the union or district of Castlebridge. The chapel is at the village of Skryne; and a residence for the R. C. curate has been built on the site of the old chapel. Here is a dispensary for the poor. About 60 children are educated in a private school.
