The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland - 1868

In 1868, the parish of Gaile contained the following places:

"GAILE, a parish in the barony of Middlethird, county Tipperary, Ireland, 5 miles S.S.W. of Thurles. Holycross is its post town. The parish extends into the Suir valley. The soil is generally good, and much of the bog has been reclaimed. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Cashel, value with Holycross, £173, in the patronage of the bishop. Gaile House, the principal residence, is seated at the foot of Killough Hill. There are some remains of the old church still standing. The road from Thurles to Cashel traverses the interior."
