The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland - 1868
In 1868, the parish of Shrule contained the following places:"SHRULE, a parish in the barony of Slivemargue, Queen's County, province of Leinster, Ireland, 2 miles N. of Carlow, its post town, lying along the river Barrow. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Leighlin, united with Slatey. The church is in ruins. It is united to Killabin in the Roman Catholic arrangement. Shrule Castle, situated on the Barrow, was built in the time of Queen Elizabeth by Sir Robert Hartpoole.
