The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland - 1868
In 1868, the parish of Earlstown contained the following places:"EARLSTOWN, a parish in the barony of Shillelogher, county Kilkenny, province of Leinster, Ireland, 1 mile E. of Callan. Thomastown is its post town. It is situated on King's river, which is crossed here by a stone bridge. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Ossory, value with Kells, £551, in the patronage of the Bishop of Ossory and the Marquis of Ormond. There is a Roman Catholic chapel at Newtown united to those of Callan and Coolagh. There are ruins of two old castles and of a church within this parish."
