BALLYMACELLIGOTT

In 1868, the parish of Ballymacelligott contained the following places:

"BALLYMACELLIGOTT, a parish in the barony of Trughanacmy, in the county of Kerry, province of Munster, Ireland, 5 miles to the S.E. of Tralee. The parish is very extensive, embracing an area of 14,018 acres, and is situated in a mountainous district, containing abundance of limestone which has been quarried since 1811. By the passage of a subterraneous stream some curious caverns have been hollowed out in the rocks. One has been likened to a cathedral, the stalactites mimicking the forms of pulpit and worshippers. It was in a wild glen in this parish that the Earl of Desmond concealed himself in 1583, where he was discovered and slain. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Limerick, Ardfert, and Aghadoe, of the value, with two others, of £430, in the patronage of the Crosbies. There are chapels belonging to the Roman Catholics, and the Wesleyan and Primitive Methodists."
