In 1868, the parish of Rathfarnham contained the following places:

"RATHFARNHAM, a parish and post-office village in the barony of Rathdown, county Dublin, province of Leinster, Ireland, 4 miles S. of Dublin. The parish includes the villages of Templeogue and Roundtown. Of the numerous residences in the parish, the most remarkable is the castle, which was built by Archbishop Loftus, and is now the property of the Marquis of Ely. The river Dodder, which passes through the parish, is here crossed by a bridge of one arch. The village contains a police station and a dispensary. Petty sessions are held weekly. Wilkes the comedian was born here. It is a rectory in the diocese of Dublin, value £218, to the patronage of the archbishop. The church was renovated and received the addition of a tower and spire in 1821, by means of a loan from the late Board of First Fruits. The Roman Catholic chapel is the head of a union. There is also a nunnery near the village, to which a school is attached. Besides the parish school there are several private establishments. A fair is held on 10th July."
