Bi Indenture of 27th September 1895 a piece of ground at Holmfirth, containing 414 sq. yards was conveyed to be used as and for the Holmfirth District Technical Institute, including science school, school of art, lecture rooms, libraries, museums, savings banks, and other collateral or auxiliary departments or branches in connexion therewith for the diffusion and advancement of education, thrift, industry, science, literature, and art. The Trustees were to be not less than 5 and not more than 21 persons, to be chosen from the subscribers to or members of the said Institute. All the trustees appointed by the deed were alive at the date of this Inquiry, except Mr. John Francis Tinker; Mr. Henry Thorp, however, did not execute the deed.

The Institute was opened in 1894 with 234 individual students, and 344 class entries; in the session of 1895-6 there were 288 students and 397 class entries; in the session of 1896-7 there were 339 students and 471 class entries.
