The place:

A parish town, in the wapentake of Osgoldcross, Liberty of Pontefract; 2 miles from Pontefract, 4 from Ferrybridge, 7 from Wakefield, 25 from York. Population 337. The Church is a vicarage, dedicated to All Saints, in the deanery of Pontefract.
