A parish in the wapentake of Rydale, Liberty of St. Peter; 6 miles from Kirkby Moorside, 6 from Pickering, 10½ from Malton, 21 from York. Population 148. The Church, a dissolved prebendary (formerly held by the Friars of Hexham), is a vicarage, dedicated to St. John Beverley, in the deanery of Rydale.
