A transcription of the Monumental Inscriptions of St Paul is included in the transcript of eleven Smethwick Cemeteries and Churches (Holy Lane Cemetery, St Alban, St Chad, St Hilda, St Mark, St Mary, St Matthew, St Michael & All Angels, St Paul, and St Stephen), published by the Birmingham & Midland SGH.
St Paul's was originally a mission church to Holy Trinity formed in 1850 in the school room of Chance Brothers' glass works in Spon Lane. It also served parts of Christ Church parish, West Bromwich.
The first church was built in 1857 in St Paul's Road and was a structure of white brick with stone dressings, in the Early English style, designed by GB Nichols of West Bromwich, consisting of an apsidal chancel, nave, transepts, north-west tower and spire, and north-east and south-east turrets.
The church burnt down in 1963, and a new church, in the Modern style was built over the east end of the former building. Designed by Denys Hinton & Associates, it incorporates the south-east turret of the old church, which survived the fire. The tower and north wall of the old church now form a screen between the road and the new church.
St Andrew's mission church to St Paul was opened in a disused Separatist chapel in 1898 on the corner of Oldbury Road and West Street. The mission church closed in 1928
