St Matthew's ecclesiastical parish was formed in 1856 from part of Smethwick Old Church. The church, in Windmill Lane was consecrated in 1855.

A transcription of the Monumental Inscriptions of St Matthew is included in the transcript of eleven Smethwick Cemeteries and Churches (Holy Lane Cemetery, St Alban, St Chad, St Hilda, St Mark, St Mary, St Matthew, St Michael & All Angels, St Paul, and St Stephen), published by the Birmingham & Midland SGH.
St Matthew's church is a structure of stone, in the Decorated style, designed by Joseph James, consisting of a chancel, aisled nave with north and south porches, and a west bellcot with one bell. A north vestry was added in 1892.
The parish was amalgamated with the parish of St Chad, Smethwick in 1970 and St Matthew's became the parish church of the new parish of St Matthew with St Chad.
