Sutton

SUTTON is a village and parish, in the Western division of the county, Rotherbridge hundred, rape of Arundel, Sutton union, Petworth county court district, diocese and archdeaconry of Chichester, and rural deanery of Midhurst: it is 5 miles south from Petworth. The chancel of the church (St. John's) is in the Decorated style; it has square tower, shingle roof, and one bell. The register commences in 1656. The living is a rectory, value £256 per annum, with residence, in the gift of Lord Leconfield, and held by the Rev. Henry Sockett, of Exeter College, Oxford. Here is the Workhouse of the Sutton union, which. comprises Barlavington, Bignor, Burton, Bury, Clapham, Coates, Duncton, Egdean, Fittleworth, Greatham, Heyshott, Patching (in West Hampnett union), South Bersted, Sutton and Warningcamp. This manor in Saxon times was held of the King by allodial tenure: after the Conquest it passed to Earl Montgomerie, and thence, by regular, descent through the Percies, it has passed to its present owner, Lord Leconfield.
