SOMPTING is a parish, in the Western division of the county, Steyning union, Brightford hundred, Worthing county court district, rape of Bramber, archdeaconry and diocese of Chichester, and rural deanery of Storrington, 59 miles south-south-west from London, one mile north-west from Lancing railway station, and 3 miles north-east from Worthing. The church is well known for its very ancient and curious Saxon tower; it has lately been handsomely decorated and re-pewed: it has an arch of early date. The living is a vicarage, annual value £199, with residence, in the gift of Henry Crofts, Esq. of Sompting Abbots, and held by the Rev. John Blake Honnywill, B.A. of St. John's College, Cambridge. Hereis a National school. The area is 2,930 acres, and the population in 1861 was 628.
