An 1868 Gazetteer description of the following places in Sutton

 

SUTTON

"SUTTON, a parish and post town in the second division of Wallington hundred, county Surrey, 3½ miles N.E. of Ewell, 4 W. of Croydon, and 5 N.E. of Epsom. It is a station on the Epsom railway. The village is situated on the old road to Reigate and Brighton.

In Domesday Book it is mentioned as a place of considerable importance, and had then two churches.

The living is a rectory* in the diocese of Winchester, value £660. The church, dedicated to St. Nicholas, contains tombs of Isaac Littlebury, translator of "Herodotus," Lady Dorothy Brownlow, and several monuments of the Talbots, besides others. The register dates from 1636. The parochial charities produce about £57 per annum, of which £6 go to Beck's school. The South Metropolitan district schools for pauper children are in this parish. The Independents have a chapel."
