"MAINSTONE, a parish partly in the hundred of Clun, county Salop, and partly in the hundred and county of Montgomery, 4½ miles S.W. of Bishop's Castle, its post town. It is situated on Offa's Dyke, and includes the townships of Castlewright, Edenope, Knuck, and Reilth. The village is a small agricultural place. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Hereford, value £293, in the patronage of the lord chancellor. The church is dedicated to St. John the Baptist. The parochial charities produce about £4 16s. per annum.
