• The Anglican parish church is dedicated to All Saints and was built in the Early English style.
   
• The oldest part of the existing building appears to be the tower which is of 13th century origin.

George HANCOCK of Bloxholm married Mary BROWN of this parish in 1790.

Richard WHITE & Elizabeth MAWL were married 18 Apr 1791.

William CHALLAND, age 25 Upwards, framework knitter, bachelor, and Elizabeth LAMB, age 25 upwards, spinster, both of this Parish were married on 27th November 1798.

Elizabeth CHALLAND died on 30th August 1801.

William CHALLAND and Anne BAILEY, both of this parish, were married in this church by Banns this fourteenth day of May in the Year of Our Lord 1802.

Thomas VICKERSTAFF & Sarah WHITE were married 21 December 1824.

Syerston Hall, a red brick mansion, was for generations the seat of the Fillingham family.

• The Great War Bulletin for December 7, 1914 tells us that two men of Syerston, G. S. COOPER and T. BAGULEY, had been appointed as "Special Constables" to assist the police force in the event of a German invasion.
   
• RAF Syerston was a late starter in World War II, built in the late 1930s due to concerns about German aggression. The base lies mostly in Flintham parish, but Syerston is happy to claim the name. The base opened in December, 1940.

• A Vulcan bomber crashed at RAF Syerston field in 1958.

George William HOWITT, born in Syerston in 1891 died in World War One as a Private in the Sherwood Foresters on 1 Jul 1916. He is remembered on the War Memorial at Newark on Trent's St. Mary Magdalene Church. He can be found on the 1901 census, age 9 on Trent Lane with his family.

Corporal Albert Edward HOWITT, born in Syerston in 1898 survived the war. He was brother to George Wm. HOWITT, above, served in the King's Royal Rifle Corps and was a prisoner of war after July 1917. He can be found in the 1901 census on Trent Lane with his family.

Another HOWITT brother was Sgt. Harry HOWITT (Leics. Regt.) born in Syerston in 1896 who was slightly wounded in the left eye by a grenade. He is age 5 in the 1901 census.

There is a list of men and women who served at RAF Syerston. It is not a War Memorial, per se, but you might want to see if one of your reltives served there.

• The name is often found spelled as "Sireston".

• This place was an ancient Chapelry of East Stoke parish in Nottingham county but it became a separate modern Civil Parish shortly after those were established.
   
• The parish was in the southern division of the ancient Newark Wapentake (Hundred) in the eastern division of the county.
   
• In March, 1884, this Civil Parish gave up Elston Grange to enlarge Elston Civil Parish, but Syerston gained 160 acres as its boundaries were revised.
   
• The citizens of this Civil Parish decided to forgo a formal Parish Council. They have scheduled, periodic Parish Meetings to discuss and vote on civic and political issues.
   
• District governance is provided by the Newark and Sherwood District Council.

• Bastardy cases would be heard in the Newark petty session hearings every other Wednesday.
   
• The Common Land was enclosed here in 1795.
   
• As a result of the 1834 Poor Law Amendment Act reforms, this parish became part of the Southwell Poor Law Union.
