• Colonel Francis Vere WRIGHT of the 3rd Btln. King's Own Staffordshire Rifles resided here in 1891 through 1912. Francis was born in Scampton, Lincolnshire in 1835. He was noted for his book on "The Broadsword As Taught by the Celebrated Italian Masters".
   
• The Great War Bulletin for August 25th, 1915 tells us that COLONEL Francis Vere WRIGHT JP and his wife held a garden party at Shelton Hall on Saturday to raise funds for wounded Italian soldiers – 30 years after he fought in a war for a united Italy, and lost two fingers when he was wounded..
   
• The Great War Bulletin for November 16th, 1914 tells us that the following men were selected as Special Constables for Shelton for the duration of the war: C. PROCTOR, cottager; Edward William HOWARD, gentleman.

The parish had a small mixed Public Elementary School built before 1904 for up to 30 children.

The inscription on the War Memorial Cross is:

"Sacred to the memory of bomb instructor Cpl Benjamin JOHNSON, Sherwood Foresters, who died on the field of battle 20 March 1918, aged 20 years. RIP."

Apparently his full name was Bertram Benjamin JOHNSON.
