SELSTON, a village and a parish in Basford district, Notts. The village stands near the Erewash river, 1 mile S of Pinxton r. station, and 3¾ S E by E of Alfreton; and has a post-office under Alfreton. The parish contains also the hamlets of Bagthorpe and Underwood, and comprises 2, 330 acres. Real property, £5,396; of which £850 are in mines. Pop. in 1851, 2,101; in 1861, 2,628. Houses, 503. The increase of pop. arose from extension of coal mining. The manor belongs to Lady Palmerston and the Earl of Mexborough. Stocking-weaving is carried on. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Lincoln. Value, £150. Patrons, the Heirs of Sir W. Dixie, Bart. The church was reported in 1859 as bad. There are chapels for Calvinists, Baptists, and Primitive Methodists.

HM Prison, Nottingham, is located in Bagthorpe township. It is a Category B local prison, holding convicted and remand adult males from the local courts in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. It opened in 1890 as a city gaol.
This large village and parish is 143 miles north of London and 12 miles north-west of Nottingham. The parish sits on the Derbyshire border. The parish covers 3,318 acres and includes the hamlets of Bagthorpe, Underwood, Hand Stubbing, Westwood and Woodnook. Jacksdale (or Jack's Dale) is a village in the parish.
Selston is divided from Derbyshire by the Erewash River. If you are planning a visit:

Jean DURBIN reports that in the Derby Mercury newspaper for 18 Oct 1854: "Trespassing in pursuit of game: Gervis GILL & G. SMITHURST were charged by Henry ROWSON gamekeeper to James OAKES Esq. with trespassing on Selston Common in pursuit of game. GILL was convicted to pay 1 pound and costs 10 shillings & 6 pence & SMITHURST 2 pounds and costs 10 shillings & 6 pence."
