"WEST HADDON, a parish in the hundred of Guilsborough, county Northampton, 7 miles N.E. of Daventry. It is a large village and parish, watered by the river Nen, and situated on the high road from Northampton to Rugby. The soil is of mixed quality, chiefly red, sand and gravel. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Peterborough, value £240. The church, dedicated to All Saints, is a handsome structure with a square embattled tower, containing five bells and a clock. The Wesleyans and Baptists have chapels. There is a National school endowed with a bequest of £1,000 by John Heygate, now vested in trustees. The parochial charities produce about £85 per annum, including the rent of 21 acres of poor's laid and 6 acres for repairing the church. There are six almshouses for aged couples. Oster Hill in this parish is a high tumulus, supposed to be that of Publius Ostorius, the proprietor of Britain. Haddon gives name to a deanery in the archdeaconry of Northampton and diocese of Peterborough. The Rev. Dr. Pemberton is lord of the manor."
